Jay, you didn't have to delete your post. I was just trying to be optimistic.

Posted: 12/20/08 at 11:34pmThey'd have a hell of a time trying the fire the director who also happened to write the book.

Just returned from this evening's performance and what a difference a couple of more days made. The show seemed tighter, but there are still some things that don't work. There are parts of the first act that just drag.
Again, the dream ballet (what there is of it) brought tears to my eyes. There are some fantastic dancers in this production and I love seeing them in that number.
I'll definitely go back again in January.

Dottie, I'll go with you. I am eager to see its evolution.
BTW, didn't the dream ballet remind you of one of Rasta's numbers in Movin' Out?

I liked it better the second time as well, Dottie. I didn't notice any changes, but it did seem different somehow.
Regarding the OP's post, I wonder if Josefina Scaglione is actually a trained opera singer. People have a tendency to exaggerate classical training (like with Emmy Rossum). From what I've heard, Josefina has a nice voice but she didn't sound that operatic to me.
West Side Story isn't an opera. Even if she did have years of experience, an operatic voice wouldn't be appropriate for the show, so I don't see why her training should make a difference. As it is, Josefina has the best voice in the show.
That ATC post bugs.
"The rape scene. It was played 'straight,' as a rape scene. Not suggested presentation of motions and dancing. It was disgusting, and not in an artistic way."
Rape IS disgusting. It shouldn't be artistic. It should make people uncomfortable.

They cut the rape choreography? Now I have even less interest. No, rape isn't meant to be artistic, but Robbins' use of movement is gripping, moving, and disturbing. It's an inventive, theatrical way to make a moment more lasting and powerful for the audience.

Posted: 12/21/08 at 12:44amFunny Arthur cut the "rape" scene from Gypsy. Why did he make this one literal and not use the Robbins staging?

I feel like this revival is just an excuse for Laurents to make it clear which elements of Robbins' choreography he doesn't enjoy.
Is the Robbins estate okay with the cutting of a major chunk of the "Somewhere" ballet AND the rape scene?

I agree with you the people who said that even though it's rape, it's also theater. And sure, theater can be very straightforward and realistic, but it can also be theatrical. It doesn't have to be realism for the sake of realism. It can be different and daring, and beautiful, and disgusting all at the same time. It's theater!
I have high hopes for this show. I'm excited to see it in when it comes to Broadway. Although it doesn't seem the production team allowed themselves much time between DC and NYC. I guess they don't foresee having to make any major changes?

Posted: 12/21/08 at 2:16amI think it's strange that Arthur cut the "rape" choreography.

is the setting still in the 50s because the costumes makes it look like it's set in modern day.
