WHOREHOUSE

Posted: 9/14/06 at 4:11pmWhy doesn't Andrea McArdle play Miss Mona in the Actor's fund performance of "Whorehouse?" She's certainly payed her dues over the years to be the star again! Are they holding out for Reba, Bonnie Raitt or Dee Hoty?

Posted: 9/14/06 at 4:18pmReally? For Dee Hoty? I would love to see that.

Posted: 9/14/06 at 4:23pmAndrea could pull it off for this concert. Dee Hoty played Miss Mona in "The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public" which has a great score.

No denying how great the score is for that show...it's a cast recording on constant rotation for me.
I would like, however, to see her in the far superior Whorehouse, rather than the unfortunate Goes Public.

Not to mention, "Doatsey Mae" is a better song than Miss Mona's songs, except the duet with Jewel.
Whose playing Jewel?
She's no great actress, remember.

Posted: 9/14/06 at 4:44pmI love McArdle's voice, but she really isn't a very good actress. A casting director friend of mine says she gets called in to Broadway auditions all the time but she just never has the acting chops to snag the role.

Posted: 9/14/06 at 4:46pmWell it all depends on whether or not they want to actually sell tickets. This woman thinks she's Annie.

Inspired, Morosco.
Delores Hall won a Tony award for Your Arm's Too Short to Box with God. Then she played Jewel...which was Holliday's first job and where she was noticed (Jennifer Yvette Holliday, I believe).
How cool to have Jennifer follow Hall into another show, 30 years later!

Oh, we all know Seth is going to have Lillias play Jewel.
#12re: WHOREHOUSE
Posted: 9/14/06 at 4:49pmThat'd be okay too.

Again, I'll say that I'd like to see Annette O'Toole as Mona. She has a quiet sexiness about her that I think would work well in the role. I think Michael's idea of Linda Purl in a previous thread is a solid one, too.
Hattie Winston is who I'd like to see play Jewel, but I agree that Jennifer Holliday would be wonderful as well. As would Lillias.

Posted: 9/14/06 at 4:54pmBTW, whatever happened to Delores Hall? She blew the hell off the roof in the original production. Magnificent!

Posted: 9/14/06 at 5:38pmWho exactly is Doatsy Mae? I remember seeing the National Tour and the character served absolutley no point to the story of the show. Could someone esplain her importance?
#18re: WHOREHOUSE
Posted: 9/14/06 at 5:43pmShe's kind of the counter to Mona. What Mona's life could have been like. They both sing about having dreams they were too scared to actually pursue.

I haven't heard much of her music since Annie, but I hope she can at least act a song if she's playing Doatsy Mae. I think her song can be pretty terrific if the singer knows what they're doing.

We saw Whorehouse Goes Public & loved it. Great score indeed
It has a had a great long opening number which Tune also had in Will Rogers

You mean the Vegas number in the beginning of Goes Public? I remember the opening of Will Rogers diffently, with Native Americans dancing on Drums and beautiful NAtive American Feather wearing chorus girls coming down the stairs.
I also recall that the Native American on the drum was Jerry Mitchell.

Posted: 9/14/06 at 6:14pmI was trying to say they (both) were very long opening numbers. Totally dissimilar in content. Tune wanted to grab you from the opening note

Got it! Thanks for the clarification. Thought I might have missed something there!
Boy, Tune sure does know how to grab attention though. I'll never forget those "assless" chaps.
