I am very fond of the show and have been for maybe over two years. I have questions that I have never once seen addressed on this message board or any others. These questions invole the Clock of the Time Dragon.
#1: Why is the clock askew on the stage? I believe the "XII" (the top of the clock) is where the "XI" should be, making "II" the top, center...or somethinglike that. Is it just to show that OZ is a different world with different laws of nature and life?
#2: What is the significance of the time at which the clock is set? I can't really tell if it's almost two o'clock or five past eleven.
#3: What is the brand name on the clock and its significance? "SIDERAI..IME?"
I have some suspicions, but nothing very strong.

The setting on the clock indicates when Elphaba melted.
As for the time being aswek there doesnt seem to be an answer maybe its because they just thought it would fit Oz being another place like you said.
No clue as to the SIDERAI..IME question.

Posted: 6/11/05 at 5:11pmYeah, good point. Its hard to understand the book from the musical, the book is so rich in detail... maybe that SIDERAI..IME thing has something to do with the book, I cant remember the book.

Posted: 6/11/05 at 5:15pmI looked at a picture of the brand name of the clock and from what I could make out (granted, I couldn't see a letter) it seemed to say "Sidereal Time." Looking it up on Wikipedia, sidereal time is a method of telling time based on the stars rather than by the sun. This means that one day in sidereal time has 23 hours and 56 minutes. I didn't really understand the article, but Sidereal Time is a possibility for the brand of the clock. Then again, it could just be put there for artistic purposes with no meaning at all...

They are both SOOOO different. Btw, if you read the book(which you better
) dont even THINK about the musical. If you do, it will prob. get confusing

Posted: 6/11/05 at 11:48pmI'm an astronmer so I feel qualified to answer the last part of your question. As the posting above stated, sidereal time is simply the actual amount of time the Earth makes a full rotation around its axis in. It is 23 hours and 56 minutes not exactly 24 hours. Thus stars rise 4 minutes earlier each night. At any rate, I'm sure the labeling SIDEREAL TIME on the set is just the spice it up and make it look authentic. A clock that made 24 rotations in 23 hrs 56 mins would have to run slightly faster than a normal clock. An hour hand rotation on such a clock that keeps sidereal time would make an hour rotation in 59 mins 49 secs.

Yes, I've read the book and there is no explanation about the timing. I think they made a huge mistake by relying so heavily on the Clock of the Time Dragon for the set concept without including anything about it in the musical. It just makes no sense to those who have not read the book.
Marvin, thank you so much for looking that up. That makes much more sense now that you've explained that. Very cool on the part of Lee.

Posted: 6/12/05 at 12:16amI, for some reason, love the fact that they used the time dragon even though they never say why.

There is only one reference made in the musical, and that is when Glinda says "According to the clock of the time dragon..."etc, explaining to the people of Oz Elphaba's death.
Other than that, there is no signifigance in the show.

Yeah, Justice, there are so many small things like that in the play. IE, "Excuse us just a tick-tock..." and "You wait a clock tick..." and as was mentioned earlier "According to the Time Dragon Clock,".
I just wish they actually incorporated a concept that the entire musical is based on, in the script as an explanation.

yes, Ainmama, there is a soon to-be-released sequel to the novel.
The title is (***spoiler-alert***) Son of A Witch.

Posted: 6/12/05 at 3:36pmIn the SF version, Glinda said something like, "but the facts that I know are these: The melting occured in a castle in Kiama-Ko at the 13th hour...western Vinkus time, the direct result.." or something like that...I haven't listened to it in a while.
