It closed because in the ensemble, a munchkin hung himself in the middle of the show.

Umm, the "hanging part" in The Wizard of Oz is a myth. However, it's certainly no damn bird either. If you look closely, it's actually someone, possibly a munchkin, swinging from a rope in the background.

No, they killed the sister in the wheelchair, I think. The flamingo was hanging around the set waiting for the birth of John Waters. Which is how we got Hairspray, which is where the back-up Glinda is from.
