Now with WIW closing, How do you think this will affect the TONY noms? Does it still stand a chance for best new musical, what about the leads?
I am eager to hear what you have to say...

Posted: 2/4/06 at 1:16amI'm sure it will get a few nods, But probably not Michael, Just Maria and - I doubt the show will even be nominated.

I think we can safely say that a Best Musical nomination won't happen. Not that it had much of a chance to begin with (before you freak out, that isn't a comment on the material's quality).
Friedman is sure to get a nomination. A great performance, coupled with a big news headline, will surely get her noticed. She won't win. That race will be between LaChanze and Lupone, probably with LaChanze having the advantage at this point.
Ball could get a Featured Actor nomination, too.
It won't win a single award, though. The sets and lighting are too controversial to be nominated.

So sad. I really do think they should have been nominated for best actress and best musical. This is a very bad musical season. Nothing new really pops out to me as best musical. While "WIW" was not my favorite, it did at least try to focus intensly on telling you a story instead of just giving you tons of flash. I sure hope next season is better because I really have not been blown away by any musical this season and I have almost seen everything. I have not seen "Jersey Boys" and I know that has popular appeal but I was really hoping something based on text and story would have made it. I guess we are living in different times.

Posted: 2/4/06 at 9:51amYou don't think Chita could pose a threat in theActress category?
re: WIW TONYS???#5
Posted: 2/4/06 at 11:11amNo. I think the producers of A Dancer's Life were out of their minds when they asked to be considered as a new musical rather than Special Event. Woman In White closing might mean they get a Best Musical nomination, but IF Chita even scores a nomination in what is already the most overcrowded category with shows still to open, she won't win.

I'm so freakin' pissed off about this. This is my 3rd angry post and I'm still pissed.
The show was so much better than half of the shows playing now. The problem is that people don't appreciate good theatre.
This won't get a nod, but I'm sure Lennon will at the rate this business is going!

I'm sorry but this is not a good show, it is boring, pretentious, boring...Maria Friedman gives a magnificent performance and she proves what a great performer she is getting the audience through a night that would be tedious otherwise.
Look for nominations in Costume Design, Best Actress (the show's early closing hurts her chances to win), Best Score, perhaps depending on the upcoming shows Best Featured Actor for Michael Ball, and I don't see this show completely shut out from the Best Musical category but with very small chances.

Maybe it closed because people are sick of the typical Andrew Lloyd Webbers Fare- repetative songs, big British stars and overbearing design elements.
I can see it getting a nod for Best Actress though.

Posted: 2/4/06 at 12:53pmI think this will end any chance of it receiving a Best Musical nomination (especially if Chaperone comes in). Freidman will still, however, without a doubt, earn a nomination as Best Actress. I think Ball's chances are iffy, since he's been out of the show so often (how many of the nominators have even seen his performance??). Actually, the more I think about it, the more I think Freidman will be its only nomination.

I know this will sound terrible. But I rather they not nominate Ball in the featured actor. I want Felciano to win that. He will have a great chance if Ball isn't nominated.
I know that is an ignorant comment. But Ball could still pose a slight threat to Felciano if Ball is indeed nominated.

Posted: 2/4/06 at 3:16pmDidn't realize that, but thanks for the info. I thought this round for the Tony voters was to establish what categories certain shows and performers were eligible for. Not to establish who/what should be nominated. But maybe I got it messed up somehow.

Posted: 2/4/06 at 3:25pmI think that Maria could be nominated for Best Actress, but I really don't see Michael getting it. Along with the fact that he has missed so many shows and the show's closing early, I think there is too much competition for this category. Right now we have Jersey Boys (Reichard and Hoff), Sweeney (Manoel and maybe Benjamin, Alex or Mark), and I don't know how big their roles are but Kingsley Leggs and Brandon Victor Dixon are there for The Color Purple. Add The Wedding Singer, Tarzan, etc. and I think there will be too much competition.
