Yup, that way he A) doesn't have to pay rights for anything and B)doesn't have to come up with anything.
Oh give the man a break. A lot of people like the way "The Scarlet Pimpernel" turned out. Furthermore, I think he made "Jekyll & HYDE" entertaining as well. And then you have: DRACULA which was an utter mess; The Civil War was..boring.
Wonderland HAD a lot of potential to be a big project for him - very easy to do a different ballad (& style) for each character. Female starring role. Lots of special stage craft. And more...

Scarlet went through HOW MANY versions? I do actually like Jekyll but he does NOT deserve a break. He has bastardized MANY classic stories. How can you still sit their & defend the man?
2 out of 14 shows are remotely enjoyable. That's pretty bad...

Scarlet went through ONE major change and artistic / design changes for the other 2 times.
The only classic story I would agree he destroyed was DRACULA. Story was un-followable. Don't know about Bonnie. This was a spinoff. Scarlet was pretty true to the novel first time around; 1982 film second time around. Jekyll seems to be a mixture of the old movie and original ideas. Civil War was a bad idea.
Zelda/ Waiting for the Moon was a great concept / very good from what I have heard and comments from those who have seen it. Camille is perhaps his best score.
For a straight man, Frank Wildhorn writes the gayest music...
