After Eight,
I don't tout the word "genius" that often, and agree with your cry against it being touted too often. But Michael Bennett had a special theatrical magic that he tossed around his productions. Any man who can come up with the Mirror Number in FOLLIES, or the original "Side By Side" number in COMPANY is very special. Maybe even a genius...at least a theatrical genius. Jerry Robbins had it. Sondheim has it (in terms on songwriting), and I think Bennett had it. Of course, Lord only knows what you'll say about my calling SS a genius.

20 years older than (ouch) and my perception of Dreamgirls was different as I grew up with the Supremes at their beginning, height and disintegration. So, I am sure that was part of why Dreamgirls resonated more with me. Not only was it good, but it was dishy in a way on the basis of the Supremes (all denials to the contrary).
I do wish I could go back in time and see Nine in its original format as i am sure i would appreciate it now much more than I did then.
