Wedding Singer - Closing or not?

It's not going to break any records for longest running show by any means, but it's certainly not doing badly enough to close.
It'll finish out the year at least (barring some huge box office drop).
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride.
I love you because I know no other way than this.
I believe in fate
But it's up to us to follow through

"DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNRELS - a show that has (or had) more star power, better reviews, and a Tony award - has still not yet made back it's money."
Then how in the world is Broadway a profitable business??! I mean, it seems like the only way to make a profit is to have a show so small and cheap (like Ave. Q) that you don't have that much to make before you've recouped, or have a smash hit like Wicked that will pack houses long enough to profit. I just don't get how musicals keep getting cranked out when even hit shows like Millie and Scoundrels don't make any money!
I guess it's like Mel Brooks says..."NEVER put your own money in a show!"

No one ever said it was. Read the book "Making It On Broadway". They discuss how before Phantom/Les Mis/Cats came to Broadway, a show only cost about 3 million (if that) to put up and they recouped in no time. Now it costs 10+ million and it's rare for a show to make its money back.

I just have to say, it is SO cool how many people knew of stephen way before wedding singer even came up!
hehe, seriously, I mean obviously I knew he was like big in the comedy world, but not many people I ever talked to knew of him,so I was starting to think maybe he was still relatively unknown! haha. But its very nice to see that he's not, because um... his comedy is friggin BRILLIANT :P like, seriously, BRILLIANT.

Posted: 7/26/06 at 9:13pmI don't think it will be at all like Wicked. They need to put in a star or they are going to get bad business. It just seems that when the tourists leave the city come September, the show may face a closing notice. They did not win a single tony after all. The Color Purple is doing well even when it won the Best Actress Tony.

September is a rough spot for 98% of shows on Broadway. Honestly, as I said, I don't see the show closing shop before the holidays when the tourists come back. And apparently their tripling box office sales the day after the Tony's doesn't mean jack since they didn't win one, right? Hmmm.... I think if they get a little more publicity going, sales will get right back up there. A performance at the Thanksgiving Day Parade could give them a huge boost.

Posted: 7/27/06 at 9:13amomg, that would be amazing1 the thanksgiving day parade! i hadnt even thought about that. maybe that could give me a chance to see the cast again! ha ha. yea, i think all the show needs is more publicity and word of mouth and it'll be a hit. it really is a great show!

Posted: 7/27/06 at 7:50pmWhy on earth would it close if Stephen left?? I mean before The Wedding Singer hardly anyone knew who he was. Well, hardly most people still dont't know who he is too. He's great but I'm just not really getting that...

You're paranoid.

Posted: 7/27/06 at 8:18pmI had no idea who Stephen was before the show, honestly. The only people he's bringing in that aren't already people who go to Broadway shows are people who were fans of his prior to this, that's all. He's like, "mini-stunt casting" or something. Haha.

Posted: 7/28/06 at 8:55amA lot of people who've been in college over the last decade or so know who Stephen is from his comedy CDs and his tours where he primarily worked college campuses. Those people are now turning into Broadway audience members. I know when my wife and I went to NYC, we knew we wanted to see The Wedding Singer simply for the fact that Stephen Lynch was in it. I think his popularity is crucial for "some" of the success.

DRS is actually quite close to turning a profit - a London company is in the process too.
I loiked wedding singer but i was thought it was never gonna be a long runner - its a show that wares out quickly. The film wasnt exactly a classic so not everyone is going to pay to see it...i fear Legally Blonde will be the same. Perhaps another film-stage show will replace it named High Fidelity?

I really couldn't imagine the show without Stephen Lynch, but if I had to think of someone who'd be a great Robbie... I'd pick Norbert. Obviously it's never gonna happen, but still - Norbert clearly has the right amount of insanity to pull off that role. It'd be fun to see.
I'd also never heard of Stephen Lynch before TWS, but that's just because I never had cable until about 2 weeks ago. His comedy gets tons of views at YouTube, though.

It'll last for another year, at least. It's very marketable to tourists and people already know the story and favor simple plots anyway, so it's the ideal fit.
It bothers me that this will last longer than complicated shows like WIW, that audiences just couldn't handle.

Unfortunately, that seems to be what audiences favor, though. They want to be entertained. Period. Nothing more, nothing less. LOL Well.. most audiences, anyway.
