My family is weird, my parents can't sing or play any instruments but all 5 of my siblings and I are musically inclined in one way or the other. I guess it skips a generation.

Alright, I know this was a page back but I just felt I needed to say this about people who don't like musicals.
My mom and I went to see the movie on Sunday (my third time, her first) and she actually really liked it as well, even though she hates every other musical she can think of. But, she had some of the dumbest things to say about it.
Mom: "You only like Mark the best because he's the lonely one."
Me: "No, I like him the best because that's who I relate to the most. Who did you like the best then?"
Mom: "Mark."
Mom: "Why didn't you tell me that LESS THAN HALF the main characters were white?" That one made me forget to breathe for a minute.
Mom: "Why were there so many gay people in it? Not that that's a bad thing! I mean, I used to have gay friends!"
She's insane. And blah half the time.

lol! that just made my night.
Hmmm...I'm impressed that you even got your mom to go!!! My mom heard a piece of the soundtrack back in '97 and after my 30 second version of the show decided it was "horrible!" Then the movie came out "Oh now the horrible play can be a horrible movie!"
There's a movie theater near their house that has movies after the big showings at the regular theaters and before the DVD release for 3 bucks. I am hoping that when it plays there I can convince her to go - it just won't be the same if I sit her down and force her to watch it on a regular TV. :)
Trying to get my mom to go to the movies is like dragging a kid out of a candy store..
Annd strangely, shes REALLY pressed to go see Rent...Even if it is only for Jesse L. Martin and Seasons of love. Hey, I'll take what I an get! Perhaps Ill Rentify her yet!

lol i have a friend who saw RENT with her parents (who are UBER christian/conservative) and hated it, but then couldn't get the music out of her head and called me asking to burn her the cd's! so now i'm rent-i-fying her lol

I made her go because she had to know what was going on for when we go see it next fall for my birthday. She talked through the movie without even whispering, I almost hit her. I didn't want her doing that on Broadway.
To rentification of non-renters!

anthony's site looks so great so far! Can't wait to see more of it. Poor guy, I don't see how he has time to even THINK.
*sends good thoughts to anthony*
I like that, viva.
And yeah, I really liked the background on his site. I'd like to make a bedspread out of that pattern.

Hi everyone!
I've been lurking on this thread for a few days, I wanted to catch up before posting. I made it to page 185 or something before I finally gave it up... I just wanted to introduce myself.
My name's Jenny and I'll be 22 in a couple weeks. I live in Kentucky. I love RENT. Haven't seen the stage version yet. Obviously I'm a fan of Anthony's.
I loved the movie- the energy it had and the emotion of it. I was so caught up in it, cried all through it.
I saw another thread about Christian views of the movie and since I'm introducing myself I wanted to say that I consider myself a very sincere Christian and I in no way think that loving RENT is "un-Christian". This movie celebrates love and life and it's a beautiful thing. Anyway... I just wanted to throw in there that I'm certainly not outraged by this movie. In fact I'm telling everyone I can to go see this movie and get the soundtrack.
I'm looking forward to getting to talk to everyone and join in on the discussions!

My mom is a RENT fan so it was simple to get her to see the movie. I asked 'Hey mom, do you want to see the RENT movie?' she said 'Sure.' Yeah, she really liked the movie too.
Welcome, Jenny.
i have friends who have asked me to send them songs/burn my CD's for them..part of me wants to tell them to go out and BUY it, but whatever. I have no luck getting my parents to go see rent..there more the 'ill go rent it when it comes out' sort of people then go see it for 10 dollars.
-welcome Jyn!
I have a fun Mom story as well. This was years ago but we were driving in the car and I had the Rent CD on. She seemed to have enjoyed it until Benny sings 'Where people piss on your stoop everynight'. She sniffed in disgust 'Did he just say piss?'. She was fine with everything else except that one line.. Eh well.. Mothers..

My dad took my to see Rent as a graduation gift last year. He's a pretty conservative guy, definitely not a theatre person (I've often said if my dad were a lesbian, he'd be an awful like Joanne, what with the organization and the obsessive listmaking... anyway, off topic) and I was a little worried he wouldn't like it. He knew the basic idea of it from me and my sister's obsessive listening to it over the years, but not the details. I was just happy that he knew how much it meant to me and took me in the first place... But he surprised the hell out of my by crying all through ICYR and telling me once it was over that he had loved it, and that Collins and Angel were his favorites. :) That totally made my world.
My mom like to pretend to get offended when me and my sister sing LVB. She'll joke "Oh my god, what are my daughters LISTENING to?" "The CD you bought me for my birthday." "Oh. Right." xD. It's all in fun... she doesn't know the show, but I definitely caught her singing parts of Boheme the other day.
Mom: "Why didn't you tell me that LESS THAN HALF the main characters were white?"
.... wooooow.
On that note, I definitely wrote my Ethnic Studies paper on Rent. :) Hooray for getting credit for babbling on about what you love!
New blog!!!! Kinda interesting on Wilsons part...he didnt have voice training til after Rent which is like woah.
And I made it to Pittsburgh ok, leaving for my audition though!
Good luck caitiesus!
Anywho, I have my first preformances. I have sung solo before and I'm in the chorus now, but this was my first time in from of more than 50 people. There were ALOT of people there. And a surprise to me, I was not nervous at all. Tech night I was! But last night was a-mah-zing! (tehe). I snuck in to watch the seniors, who go after us, and that was my third time seeing their preformance. Gosh, it was so great.
And, while the freshmen and sophmores were going, my friend and I were singing songs from Wicked and Rent. She and another friend told me my voice reminded them of Kristin, but I don't see (hear?) it. But, we got the girls on the other side of the locker room to sing One Song Glory. AND we scared a freshman by singing Today 4 U, WITH dance moves. And we did Tango: Maureen. I was Mark. :) I did crazy tango moves.
Mind you, I'm in a witches costume with a black point hat...It may have looked strange.
Good times. No school today because of snow, therefore no preformance tonight. I'm really bum. I mean, they do sports when there's no school. Stubborn administrators. -_-
But, my teacher was very impressed and happy. Gosh, she's the greatest.
Edit: Wilson made me squeal. Tehe
