Red wine is definitely an age-thing.

Perhaps Luke can tell us whether his suggestion is also age-related?

I'm not a tax-expert either even though I've just taken a tax-advice-wanted 'phone call disguised as a new-years-eve-in- Snowdonia invitation. I shouldn't be so cynical.

Hibernating...

Can't stand NYE, the only ones I've ever enjoyed were when I was working on NYE or when I was skiing so I'll be doing the same as I've done for the last couple of years; I'll get myself some nice food and a DVD I want to watch and then I'll be in bed and asleep with my phone off by 11.30 - bliss!

Oh pfft, I watch for the eternal Hislop/Merton double-act. It's also amusing watching Ken Livingston getting a severe ribbing. ^_^

New Year will probably be in London again. Except I'm going to be late to the party, because I thought I'd save travel costs and see 'Twelfth Night' at the same time. XD I'll be at some bridge or another for fireworks though, so that'll be fun. :3 Anyone else doing a London New Year?

I did the South Bank fireworks last year (straight after a flight from Vienna!) and was utterly disappointed - getting home was hell and there was so much smoke that I couldn't see anything after 20 seconds. This year I'll stay home and watch them on telly.

New Years Eve (and Christmas to some extent) remind me of what one critic said about early 1980s West End musical The Mitford Girls: "Full of calculated high spirits, none of which managed to raise mine."

So although Sister George and I may be chalk and cheese on Imagine This and The History Boys we are definitely together on showing the new year some contempt by sleeping through it.

But I'm being cynical again and like Sam says I shouldn't be. I have had some good fun New Years Eves as well, including one in Amsterdam where I saw someone near me light a firework held in his hand with the cigarette in his mouth!

Vienna is actually a great place to be for New Year's eve as everyone goes to the canal or the Danube and sets off all kinds of fireworks (including rockets and roman candles) regardless of the fact that they're in the city centre. Sadly the year I lived there I had a hell of a cold from Christmas Eve to New Year's Eve and couldn't buy my own fireworks to go with it.

Oh guys...am i the only one partying it up?! im disappointed in you lot! it's all about...friends, loud music (preferably bad 90's pop music), cheap vodka and a midnight only being the start of the party :)

Age is no excuse! Party spirit and cheap alcohol with a scarilly high alcohol percentage, is all you need! A bit of Britney and Steps...i dare you all to do it..go on, go party! :)

No way Mr Sam,

But spontaneously invite me to a party with cheap alcohol, Britney and Steps during mid-week in the middle of January, I'm there and I ain't leaving until the bitter, bitter end! (strictly a Kiki DuRane approach to leaving parties)

But tell me I have to have fun on a specific night with everyone else (who never normally bother) at vastly inflated prices then I'm hibernating.

(I also get great pleasure from watching all the couples being forced to talk to each other and be romantic, cramped into a restaurant on 14 Feb, again paying vastly inflated prices)

Same reason why I'm normally on here on a Friday and Saturday night - I much prefer the late night crowd on Sun-Thurs in London.

I've had ONE valentines card in my life, about 8 years ago. It was from 2 people, but how budget that they couldn't even get a card each?!

Do they have the traditions of classroom valentines here where everybody in the class does for each other? They did when I was in school and it was fun just to get a new set of Peanuts or Ninja Turtle images or whatever the hot cartoon was.

Nowadays I consider February 15th to be the real holiday as it's when all the chocolate goes on sale.
