For years now the voters of the cast album Grammy have generally known nothing about the scores nominated or even musical theatre in general. Most often they don't bother listening and simply vote for the title with the most name recognition... hence: WSS!
Overall I thought it was a fine CD, but lacking the excitement (as well as the many wrong note) of the original.
Of the "new" scores I find NEXT TO NORMAL more interesting that SHREk but it starts to pall after a while: Too much of the same thing over and over.
I really like the new AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' - It crackles with excitement. And I am generally quite fond of the new HAIR, though it is not overall a favourite score for me.
25 years ago the Cast album Grammy went to Thomas Shepard and Stephen Sondheim for SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE. Now that was a deserved award for both gentlemen!
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
Oh I should have guessed about there being no real way of the voters picking one. I actually find Next to Normal to have a lot of variety, but thats just my two cents.
It is an early 80th birthday present to Sondheim.
Yeah, like any of those Grammy voters know or even care that Sondheim's 80th birthday is approaching.
Not to mention that the award doesn't go to Sondheim.
HAIR deserved the award for their gorgeously produced album.
Add me to the list of people who think Hair should have won this award.
frontrowcentre2 is exactly right. I remember reading an article where it showed how little the Grammy voters actually research the nominees before voting. They said that was why Steely Dan won big in '01--all the older voters who had heard Steely Dan back in the day but hadn't heard the other artists just voted for the name they knew rather than researching all the nominees.

Hair should have won.
Though I love Next to Normal, I can see why it wasn't nominated. While the score is great, the recording is rather dull and flat.
I don't think Hair or WSS should have even been nominated. They already had their chance to win Grammy's. Out of all of cast albums, I don't really think any should have won. If I had to chose, I'd chose N2N.
As per my facebook when it happened:
"Anyone else BEFUDDLED why the ****eous recording of WEST SIDE STORY won the BEST Cast Soundtrack? REALLY? Proves again the Grammys have NO idea what they are doing when it comes to that award! HAIR should have walked away with that...who the eff are they kidding!?
