Top 10, not in order. I took quality of the recording, whether the cast was at their best on it, and if things were left out on it, into consideration.
1. The Boy From Oz, 2. Curtains, 3. Into the Woods Revival, 4. Jane Eyre, 5. Legally Blonde, 6. The Light in the Piazza, 7. Next to Normal, 8. Spamalot (although I wish it had "I am Arthur, King of.." on it, 9. Wedding Singer, 10. [Title of show]
Shows I love, but the recording shouldve been better:
1. Wicked: I don't like the abscence of the "It's Meee" in Defying Gravity, and the absense of the whole Wicked Witch of the East segment. Idina is also singing differently on it, she was sick I believe, her tone is darker/huskier, than when she was singing it live
2. Gypsy: I just think Patti sounded really messy on a lot of the tracks, she sounded MUCH better live. I love her, don't get me wrong, but I dont think the recording showed her at her best.
3. The Pirate Queen: It's missing A LOT of the score, probably half. The recorded tracks however are Great
1. CAROLINE, OR CHANGE 2. THE WILD PARTY (LaChiusa) 3. SOUTH PACIFIC (2008 Revival) 4. GREY GARDENS 5. HAIR (2009 Revival) 6. 110 IN THE SHADE (2007 Revival) 7. THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA 8. THE BUBBLY BLACK GIRL SHEDS HER CHAMELEON SKIN 9. URINETOWN 10. COMPANY (2006 Revival)
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Nice to see someone else picking LaChiusa's WILD PARTY cast recording. It's wonderful, Toni Collette is simply fascinating to listen to, and really the rest of the cast is in top shape. "My Best Friend" is one of my favorites, wouldn't it be a thrill to see Pinkins and Collette tackle "Bosom Buddies" in concert one day? I was going to include 110 IN THE SHADE as well, it's beautifully produced.

I don't want to be the negative nelly in this thread, but I am very surprised by the amount of people placing 9 to 5's recording on this list. Two really great songs and the rest are mediocore at best. I really enjoyed seeing the show but we are talking about the best of almost a decade of musicals, so I must respectfuly disagree.
I guess it's a matter of opinion. I was just actually thinking I wanted to add 9 to 5 to my list of favorites. I really like the score and the cast. The album itself is put together very well too.
9 TO 5 is just plain fun for me. It sounds excellent as well. I happen to like most of the music from the show. Of course, there are a few duds. However, it's gotten quite a lot of play on my iPod since I purchased it last week.

spiderdj82, you're not. Two people (including myself) have listed it as their favourite recording of the decade [so far].
It also won the GRAMMY so it's not entirely unrecognised :P.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
spider, I'm also with you. That's another recording I was close to including on my list. I do prefer Benanti and Larkin to Blanchard and Reinders but otherwise, I'm a big big supporter of the '03 revival recording.

1. Grey Gardens 2. The Light in the Piazza 3. 25Th....Spelling Bee 4 In the Heights 5. Thoroughly Modern Millie 6. Gypsy (Patti) 7. Assassins 8. See What I Wanna See 9. Sunday in the Park with George 10. Sweeney Todd Revival
1.) The Light in the Piazza 2.) Not POSITIVE if its 1999 or 2000 but Lippa's Wild Party. Its not really a great show, but the score is fantastic. 3.) Spamalot 4.) Sweeney Todd- John Doyle's 5.) Thoroughly Modern Millie 6.) Grey Gardens 7.) Urinetown (even if the sound quality is a little tinny) 8.) Hair Benefit Concert (not the current revival). Not sure if it counts, but that lineup of singers is a knockout. Jennifer Hudson's rendition of Easy to Be Hard is reason enough to buy it. 9.)Jersey Boys 10.) Wicked
EDIT: Soliantu, you don't like Idina on the Wicked recording? Oh I think its some of the best she's sounded. Updated On: 7/24/09 at 06:10 PM
