#1What Happened with the 2001 Dreamgirls revival?
Posted: 6/30/13 at 10:49amIt only ran for 1 performance? It looked like they had a great cast including Audra, Norm Lewis and Heather Headley, so what happened?

Posted: 6/30/13 at 10:51amIt was a one night only Actor's Fund benefit concert, not a revival. Updated On: 6/30/13 at 10:51 AM

Did you hear Heather Headley's version of "Ain't No Party?"
If you had then you wouldn't be asking why they never ran. Besides the fact that it was a one night only engagement, that rendition was horrendous.

I was looking forward to catching Dreamgirls at the Wolf Trap in August, but looks like it got canceled.
The 2009 tour was not selling too well, and if I remember correctly, closed a few weeks earlier than expected. A tour in the late '90s was also "Broadway bound" and never made it. Who knows when it will be back.

Her performance is rather unfortunate. I wonder if it was just out of her range or if her voice was just shot? Billy Porter's voice was apparently pretty rough during the performance so he went into a studio after the concert and was able to rerecord much of his material. I wonder why they didn't have Headley do the same?
It is a miracle we even have this recording to enjoy. This performance was just a couple weeks after the 911 tragedy.
