My comment suggesting the "Attack on the Rue Plumet" scene was in response to Popculture37 stating that Thenardier said something about the brand, which he didn't. It's Montparnasse who does, and he does it in the scene I noted.

Well, I have the 1990 libretto for the show right in front of me, and Thernardier most definitely does mention the brand, in the "Javert's Intervention Scene" right after "Look Down." Javert's asking him what happened; Thernardier answers:
He's the one you should arrest,
No more bourgoise when you scratch him
Than the brand upon his chest!
...which leads Javert to think about Valjean and go into Stars.
Montparnasse does mention the brand in the Rue Plumet scene, but there's that long exchange between Javert and Thernardier first.
