What I would like to see in a possible Follies revival

The faded-stars production ffffflagg is talking about is that same one show queens have been talking about for 30 years. It's a tired and dated concept that this production finally put out of its misery.
There ARE no faded stars left. They're all DEAD--do you hear me? DEAD!--and the ones who are still alive are not worth casting.
I'm much more concerned with the director and choreographer being able to create compelling ghost staging and the budget being high enough to provide a contrast between the abandoned theater and Loveland.
But shut UP about a Follies starring Goldie Hawn and Robert DeNiro already.

At least Encores! used the original ending.
It was a special treat hearing Donna recite the famous "Hope doesn't grow on trees" line.

I agree that the whole "faded stars" thing is getting tired. Prince was lucky in 1971 to have those people available, and yes we wont see their like again. But that's no reason to say the production cant be successful without them. There have been revivals of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN without Merman, and (shock! surprise! eyes wide! lips moue!) they were successful.
Insofar as the design approach, one of the joys of a play like FOLLIES is that anything is possible, no matter how unlikely.

- One of the best lines from any musical.

Agreed. Wait till you see the production in which Robbiej and I play Sally and Phyllis, respectively.

Posted: 2/14/07 at 6:00pmWell, personally I would draw the line at having Sally lug a tuba around all night.

Big problem with Dustin Hoffman and Sondheim: He is known for not singing. Period. They auditioned him for the original "Apple Tree" and hated him for that, but he did some film called "The Graduate" instead.
Don't ask me why, but I would be really interested to see the "Loveland" sequence done with huge, bright costumes, while the set doesn't change at all. It might not work at all, just an idea that occured to me to save money.
And, Sally wouldn't be a tuba...I see her as more of a cello or a harp.

Posted: 2/14/07 at 6:18pmI see Phyllis as a cello or harp - elegant, yet sensual.

I can't imagine how that would work. It would be very hard to make it clear that the theatre has actually been turned into Loveland. It would seem like a bunch of showgirls stormed the theatre.

Well, I think its safe to say they aren't film stars. And I agree with PalJoey and others -- the original FOLLIES simply came from a different time and era; you can't replicate the connection the original cast had to the "pastiche" material.
I think its fun to "star" cast FOLLIES as an exercise in being a show queen - but celebrity is not what the show is about. If its ever made into a movie - then we can talk movie star casting.

Well, Rob Marshall was there opening night, it would be great to see him helming another Marhsall/Condon movie musical.

Posted: 2/14/07 at 8:10pmI think they should wait ten years and cast Nicole Kidman, Renee Zelwegger, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt. Catherine Zeta Jones can be Carlotta.

Posted: 2/14/07 at 8:36pmWell the plus side to casting Zeta-Jones as Carlotta is that that "I should have gone to an acting school" line will finally make sense.
