Zorba.

It's a hugely flawed show--I blame a lot on the source material which I found misogynistic. But that said... I love the show.

More interestingly though if you're into musical theatre, I think the original production (avoid the revivcal/revisal recording as much as possible--it softened the show and ruined its appeal to me) is a huge bridge between Cabaret and the Prince/Sondheim shows, and I fully believe they wouldn't have existed as brilliantly without it. Try to track down pictures of the original production (the gorgeous book of Aronson's designs is a good starting place) and track down the script, but the cast album itself is one of the best Capitol (ie not saying much) produced. For me, it is the not much discussed link between Prince's start with concept musicals, with Cabaret, and the Sondheim shows.

I love Kander and Ebb but think they only really became brilliant (I don't know S Boys yet) when under the guidance of a great director--ie Prince on stage (Kiss of the Spider Woman was one of the first big touring shows I saw that blew me away), and Fosse on screen and stage.

ut yes, track down the OBC of Zorba if you care about the history of K&E and Broadway.

(The Rink, an extremely flawed show with a lot of greatness, would be my second choice). Updated On: 3/30/11 at 03:34 AM

Speaking of, is the revival of Zorba still in the works? ANd are they still unfortunately using the "cheered up" revised version?

I saw The Visit at The Goodman and it was dark and memorable. It needs to be produced off Broadway or regional. It deserves to be on Broadway but I don't think it would last long. It's that dark.
