"Jesse L. Martin and Lea Thompson are not big enough names to star in a movie musical nowadays. Jane Krakowski would be very good, actually, and so would Kathy Bates, but Robin Williams as Tateh? Come on."
I'll put in my two cents for the Ragtime issue, as I always do. I would love to see Ragtime as a movie, to bring the message to the masses. But, I could never imagine any of these people in the show, as well as Renee Zellwegger. I have always pictured the show as being the little engine that could, even though it had huge effects etc., let me get to my point. The story should stand on its own, without the big names. Let the story be told, not the actors overshadow it.
With a few exceptions, I'm not at all a fan of most movie musicals, specifically newer ones. It takes away so much of what I feel a musical is about, but perhaps that's because I'm spoiled by associating musicals with live theater. I do agree with brdwaybaby17's comment: "The story should stand on its own, without the big names. Let the story be told, not the actors overshadow it." I think that's happening too often, and probably part of the reason I don't like movie musicals. I do like what they did with Oklahoma! recently, where the stage version is filmed. I could go for more of those.
Okay---here's the point I'm trying to make. If an unknown musical- like Ragtime- is cast with Broadway performers, they won't be interested in seeing it. Do you think if Chicago starred Roxanne Carrasco, Amy Spanger and Brent Barrett, it would have done as well as it did? Broadway actors may be better then these movie stars, but they don't mean anything to the general public, and no one would flock to see them. People would much rather go to the movies to see Richard Gere sing and dance- THAT'S THE WAY IT IS.
If it were up to me, a movie version of Ragtime would include all of its original cast members- but who would the public rather see in a movie--Renee Zellwegger or Janine LaManna? Let's cast a CELEBRITY who could do the role decently. Tickets are sold and the Broadway population and the general public both get what they want.
I don't know, I mean people go to see live shows and movies all the time without big names. The actors in either might have a big name when it was over, but sometimes it really is about the story. Not everyone in the world is a mindless drone, not quite yet. And anyway, Ragtime is already a movie.
Frisky Summer 2
Like I said before... Broadway or film, I can't see any other actors (with maybe one or two exceptions) doing the roles better than the way that I have listed them.
