as much as i love the little shop finale, i have to say the best finale for me is the king and i, i was literally fighting back tears last time i saw it
Well, as far as best overall ending, add my vote to Hairspray. I've never left a theater feeling more happy and overjoyed !!
As for emotinal endings, Miss Saigon got me by the heart and throat !!
Take care
i'm a little surprised that no one has said Sweeney Todd yet, when i first saw that show i was blown away by the "kill all" ending....kinda shakespeare...ish.
I also like how Jekyll and Hyde ends although i will never ever like the role of Emma because of the way the music has been written.
Blood Brothers.
Cause David and Shaun Cassidy were finally shot and couldn't sing anymore.
Urinetown! INGENIOUS.
i was almost crying at phantom last time i saw it. wicked is creative. hairspray... "you can't stop the beat" is just the best full company number in my opinion
i totallyt agree with you zepka, wicked was creative! I loed the Hairspray ending, although ive never seen it, i know the ending and all and it's a really powerful message and all so its cool
Phantom of the opera def.
and Aida..very sad but so so touching
The Sound of Music - To this day whenever I watch the movie or see it on stage, hearing the entire chorus of nuns singing amazing harmony in "Climb Every Mountain" while the family leaves everything familiar to them behind to flee the Nazi's and start over gives me chills every time.
The King and I - It is so heart wrenching to see this amazing, loving man say his final words to all his children, and especially Anna who, by this time, is madly in love with him. It always makes me cry, and I think it's masterfully written.
Cabaret - Never have I been this depressed and inspired and completely speechless after a musical. I'm talking about the revival staging, certainly not the original. I wasn't ready to let go and actually applaud for the actors because I was still in awe of the show's beauty and amazingly staged finale.
Nine - It brought tears to my eyes every time the music would swell, Little Guido taking the gun from Guido, and then all the women in their lives (atleast in the revival,) come down the staircase for the last time to kiss, hug, and essentially "thank" Little Guido for saving his older self's life. Whenever the mother would embrace him, I would sometimes literally start sobbing. And finally, as the cast assembled themselves on the circular staircase and as they hold out the dim, mysterious last note, Louisa enters and Guido turns to her - and the audience knows everything between them is going to be alright. It was brilliant.
Others that come to mind, but no where near as perfect as the above, are Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park with George, Gypsy, Rent, Fiddler on the Roof, Brigadoon, Bare, Peter Pan, and South Pacific.

'Cabaret'. And why? Because the first time a musical made me leave wishing I never went in to see the show. For the first time a musical brought tears to my eyes and kept me depressed for a week. It really made me feel something. I guess that's why I've always refused to go to any other productions of it.
And for 'Into the Woods', I love the show. I'm playing the Baker right now. But I HAAAAAAAAAATE the ending.

Pippin(the revival)- All the set is taken away and it's just Pippin and the things that means most. Then he exsists with Catherine and all the players enter and try to start the cycle over. It's like its ends how it began.

There are so many great endings...
When Radames and Aida find each other again and Amneris is watching over them...
"You must always leave the wall" The Fantasticks
The Sharks catching Tony's body in West Side Story.
And I've only seen it onstage once, during it's most recent Broadway fun, but Showboat...I love when the lady tells Magnolia how she's happy to see that she had Ravenel are still married after all those years.

Beautifully said.
Into the Woods does have a great ending.
1. Cabaret
2. Aida
3. Miss Saigon (as Cabaret... not really the 'best' one but it certainly had an effect on my when I saw the show for the first time)
I'm sure there are some more endings I loved... just need to think a bit more.
QM
I won't say it......don't make me say it........Ooooooooooooo Cookies.......I still won't say it........ALRIGHT!!!

I love the music at the end of Rent and the harmonies, but I think Wicked has a very tearful ending. New show that I am a fan of, BKLYN... has a good ending. What else... Aida. Can't think of anymore but if I had to choose just one... Wicked!
The Full Monty had a great ending -- and not because they actually went the full monty (although I must say that was a plus).

Cabaret - I saw the Australian tour which is based on the Revival. I was numb. I couldn't move, couldn't speak, let alone applaud. I had so many images flying through my head from Schindler's List and those war documentaries, from what my Grandmother told me about living in German occupation as an eleven year old girl in the netherlands...i wanted to curl up and stop myself from thinking for days after seeing it...i was so moved.
Sunday in the Park with George - Move On is such a beautiful resolution, and the reprise of Sunday as they all reassume the canvas, then ending with White...sheer brilliance.
The final sequence of Sweeney Todd is just thrilling...sometimes i just love to listen to it and none of the rest of the score...it is just so moving.

A short list.
HAIRSPRAY (good times)
THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES (Love that swirling fog tunnel to heaven)
COMPANY
MISS SAIGON (dying Kim will always ...ok I'm over it. but best doesn't have to mean 'good' or 'happy')
RENT (that "movie" Mark finally shows with the music is moving)
SUNSET BOULEVARD (I vaguely remember Glen Close's face devouring the audience in one giant projection)
I love the "Spring Song" in A New Brain :)

Wicked...i love how the real ending doesnt come out until the last minute of the show, and you're still recovering from the surprise when you leave. Into the Woods is awesome, too.
I'll put in another vote for Cabaret. I couldn't move, think, or breathe!
tick, tick... BOOM!-- love that one, it's just so perfect. I really liked the way Assassins ended, too. I guess I like ambiguous endings. : )
1. Wicked I just love it.. I'm not psycho about it but it's very creative and you never know what other surprises will come along...
2. Chicago - one of my utmost favs... I love the final dance number w/ Roxie and Velma
don't think "Elisabeth" would ever make it to NY...
