Dianne Warren writes very beautiful music.
Yes; if only it had been your second post I was replying to.

Nellie McKay
During her last concert at Joe's Pub there was a running gag of how Nellie McKay had been approached to make a musical out of the movie Election. She played several songs from it that were totally bizarre. Pretty sure it was just a joke though, although with her you never know.
I second Aimee Mann.
Billy Joel, perhaps.
I know Movin' Out was done with his songs, so it might be weird to have another musicals with his songs that the actors actually sing, but I'm talking about a new score not using his original music.
Danny Elfman is writing a musical. He's working on "Houdini" which, I think, is a great vehicle for him.
They didn't write all of their own stuff but I've been wondering for quite some time how a musical using the music of the Carpenters would work. I don't know if it would be best to do it as their biography ala "Jersey Boys" or have a totally different plot like "Mamma Mia" or "All Shook Up."
I'd like to, also, throw Michael Buble out there. The original stuff he has written and co-written has been really good. I love "Home" and "Lost".

Billy Joel should take his "Italian Restaurant" idea and make it a show. Different patrons in different time periods visiting the restaurant (like the French movie Le Bal).

I think "Piano Man" could work as a show also. Maybe even "Goodnight Saigon" but that show would probably end up being too close to "Miss Saigon".

I 2nd or 3rd the idea of Billy Joel writing music for a musical. And Kate Bush. Vienna Teng might be interesting.
