What Oprah's $$$$$ Contribution Should Go To...

My second Oprah/Color Purple topic in two days, but anyway...

Oprah's $$$$$ producing contribution should go towards putting COLOR PURPLE on DVD.

a) They're using her for publicity anyway and don't really need her money.
b) The money that she put in (or puts in $500,000 more) can go towards the DVD, and she'd get some of it back.
c) She can afford to lose $250,000.
d) She can market the DVD on her talk show, too.
e) They should record the production professionally NOW to preserve the OBC then release it in a few years or after it closes, whichever comes first.
f) They can sell them on the tour.
g) I loved the show and listen to the cast recording constantly.
h) That is all.

re: What Oprah's $$$$$ Contribution Should Go To...

Well, if the DVD of the show were available for, say $29.95, then why on earth would anyone pay $110 per ticket on Broadway (and only slightly less on tour)? Why would a family of four plunk down almost $500 (with telecharge fees) when all four can sit and watch it together for a fraction of that. Yes, while we here know that nothing beats the live experience, given a choice between paying $500 and $30, many would choose the latter.

They would cannibalize many many millions in potential sales if they were release such a DVD during the Broadway run (and it looks like the show will run for a few years and tour even longer). Perhaps, they might think about releasing it 10 years or so from now, but at that point, it's doubtful that Oprah will still have her show and who knows if she'd have the same influence.

Anyway, while a DVD might be a great thing for fans of the show, I just can't see why on earth the producers and creative team of the show would be interested in the distribution of something that could potentially cost them many millions in ticket sales.

I agree with Margo. I don't know what her money went to but I would suggest it go to some adverstising outside of the east coast area. We in Denver don't see commercials for shows unless it is on a cable station. I miss that about living back east. Of course a lot of people know about the show but a lot don't. I wear my t-shirt from the show and people ask me where I got it and say they love the movie. When I tell them that the shirt is from the Broadway Musical, most respond by asking "It's a musical?" It was fun at the Tonys to see all of the old show commercials during the commercial breaks. (They showed them at RCMH in between segments near the end of the ceremony)

Either you mis-read or I mis-wrote.

The OBC should be recorded but the DVD shouldn't be released until the Broadway production closes (or several several years from now if it stays open that long).

Then if a tour happens, it can be sold on the tour (unless the tour happens very soon).

I've said this many times in my "Broadway Show to DVD" threads - a show should NEVER be sold on DVD while it's open on Broadway (unless its a CATS situation).

I don't think it should be sold while the show is on tour either. Although "Swan Lake", "Riverdance" and the Le Miz DVDs have been out while the shows were on tour and they did well. But I don't think TCP should be released until after it closes on Broadway and any tours are done. JMO

When Oprah tells you how to spend your money, you can tell her how to spend hers.

I don't think we are telling anyone how to do anything....they are suggestions.
And when she tells her audience to go buy a book, or a CD or see "her" show The Color Purple....she is telling people how to spend their money. If we want to get technical!

And also all the money management shows she's had? Puh-lease. Oprah controls the world.

See, now, there you're getting into tricky territory. You have no idea how much she already contributes to charity - that would be a completely different budget anyway.

I'm sure most people prefer to make their own decisions when choosing a charity. Everyone has particular causes that are closer to their heart for their own personal reasons.

Yes, but would you want The Color Purple on DVD?

If that happends ticket sales for the show will not be as high, which would be taking away money from Broadway, but if she donated to a charity it would be adding money.

One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. She can do either one, or both, or neither.

You're all missing the point.

Preserve OBC (or current cast) now. Release the DVD when it closes.

Clear?

they can sell it AT the theatre where the tour is playing at... That way, people who even come close to those DVDs are people who already have bought the tickets.

You already posted that and I am not missing the point.

I don't understand why The Color Purple should be preserved and not any other musical or play.

re: What Oprah's $$$$$ Contribution Should Go To...

Ah. That one's easy. Oprah. If Oprah wasn't attached, this thread wouldn't have been created.

It costs $500,000 to put a show on DVD and producers are lucky to make half of that back.

For Oprah, $250,000 is a penny. And if she likes the show so much, why wouldn't she?

Lots of plays and musicals are preserved. I forget which library but they can be viewed there if you are a member. I am sure someone here can explain this better than I right now.
