After watching a lot of TV on DVD this weekend I had a couple thoughts to bump this thread. Pushing Daisies is just screaming to be a musical. It's already so stylized and quirky, it would make a really good show. Also, though not exactly jazz-hands material, I think The Good Wife could make a good show. At its core, there's a strong heroine trying to keep her family and life together, and a tricky love triangle with her amoral cheating husband and her loyal law school friend turned boss. And the best shows are built on relationships. Just a thought.
"Gilligan's Island" kept popping into my head as I read this thread, and I couldn't figure out why, given that as much I love it (I grew up with it), I know it ain't great.
The characters, though, are iconic in a way. On a very simple level, they're identifiable by their look: a skinny guy in a red shirt, white pants, and sailor hat IS Gilligan, whoever's playing him.
But then I realized that the reason I think this one could work is that throughout the entire series, there is one through-line, no matter what the individual plot of each episode is: They want to go home.
That's what could make it a satisfying representation of the show, no matter what incidents actually occur during its two hours on stage.
