The Threepenny Opera revival
-is there any news on whether they plan to record? it would be such a waste if it closes without having been preserved
Gypsy (with Patti LuPone at Ravinia)
-to my knowledge, nothing that has played there has been recorded and I am aware of the issue with Arthur Laurents, but does it have any chance of a cast album? Patti LuPone is the ideal Mama Rose and her performance needs to be captured on CD...I wonder if it is possible and if anyone in a position to try will do so.
I'd love to hear any facts or opinions on the matters. Thanks!
Threepenny is more likely than Gypsy- which i see at nil to none
A release date of Threepenny has been announced but I forget the actual date.

what was the company that is releasing 3penny?
Given that there are six (6!) recordings of GYPSY in the catalogue now (Ethel Merman, Roz Russell/Lisa Kirk, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bette Midler and Bernadette Peters)a 7th - no matter WHO is cast as Madame Rose - would be a total waste when so many other shows have never been recorded at all. Also none of the Ravinia concerts have neen recorded before.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

And yet, no recording has included "Traveling" (the "Some People" reprise).

H.Higgins, I was going to say the exact thing about The Threepenny Opera. This is an amazing production, and it would be a tragedy not to get a recording from it. I saw it Thursady night, and am addicted! I can't wait for the rcording!
All I'm saying is that if some record producer decides to put up the money for a recording of Ravinia's GYPSY, it would be a very smart money-making move. Do you know how many people would buy this CD, and continue to buy it for years to come?
I'm a proud owner of each of the Gypsy recordings. Each has their own merits. I would certainly buy a recording of Gypsy with Patti on it if one were made.

Threepenny has not been announced, that I've heard. Updated On: 4/29/06 at 08:02 AM
If I remember correctly, THE THREEPENNY OPERA is being recorded and released by PS Classics.

There's nothing on the PS Classics site about recording Threepenny.
No offense to just john and melissa errico fan, but this has been going on for weeks now in various threads where someone says "I heard about the Threepenny Recording...it' going to be such and such..." And then you ask them to follow up with details like where'd you hear about that, and you get nothing.
I am very anxious to hear about this recording, but I'm pretty sure that if an announcement had been made, there'd be a big headline in the news section of Broadwayworld.com. In the meantime, we're just torturing ourselves listening to idle gossip with precious few details.

I am nearly positive that no Threepenny official announcement has been made, though the disc is likely to happen.
I wouldn't hold your breath for Patti's Gypsy though.
I think that if THREEPENNY were going to be recorded, we probably would have heard some formal announcement about it by now. After those reviews, however, I can't imagine any record company scrambling to pick it up - there is a limited audience for such a thing to begin with...
It seems weird that Lauper's label would allow her to record with someone else without requesting money (or a cut of the sales) that Ps Classics likely doesn't have.
And if the Sting production didn't get a recording...
I realize that many "Gypsy" recordings already exist and no one is more unhappy with how many shows unfortunately go unrecorded than I am, but I don't think that makes an additional recording unjustified. With someone as stellar and ideal as Patti LuPone in the role of Rose, it would be entirely worthwhile and should sell well. For me, the issue is not wether or not it deserves to be recorded, but who, if anyone would be willing/able to make it happen?
As for Threepenny, I have definitely not seen an announcement of any kind, but was hoping someone else might have an inside track. Despite the batch of negative reviews, I really hope a record label steps in and preserves this production on disc.
If they didn't record the Buckley Gyspy, I doubt they'd do this one. I imagine that Laurents will to everything possible to stop this if it does come up.
I am really hoping for a Patti recording of her Gypsy performance. For the amount of time she will be in the role, most people will not be able to see her, which is a great shame. This ady is amazing in almost everything she does.

Whether or not the offical announcent for Threepenny has or hasn't been made...I really it's either true (that it's going to be recorded) or that the announcement is offically made...it would be a shame if it was never recored.
"And yet, no recording has included "Traveling" (the "Some People" reprise). "
I know! It's so upsetting, each reacording is basically the same thing with different people. I find the BP version the most complete, it has some dialogue in there too, which is a good thing!
Is LESTAT getting a recording? Cuz when i saw it they were pre ordering the cd if u wanted to but im afraid its gonna close (and flop for that matter)
Of course "Traveling" isn't recorded. It reprises musical material heard in teh main song and it relies on the visual staging (Showing Rose abducting the various boys along the road) that it would be ineffective on records.
Now if John Yap were to produce one of his note-complete 2 CD recordings of GYPSY that would be the place for it (alomg with othere scene chnage and exit music) but it seems his series has reached a standstill with many yet-unreleased titles (including ONE TOUCH OF VENUS) because teh market for cast albums is so soft right now.
A good cast album doesn't necessarily record EVERY SINGLE NOTE heard in the theatre. That would make for a boring recording. The album producer eliminates unnessesary reprises, lengthy dance music and segments deemed too visual. What we get is a distillatiomn of the best musical moments from a show and sometimes a bit of dialogue.
