I think Godspell is too "out there" to work for film. I own the movie and enjoy some of the performances but I'd compare it best to Hair: you have to experience it live, it's a theatrical event. In the original production, the cast hung out with the audience during intermission. You need an intermission between the acts in order to transition to the Passion and Resurrection. It's one of my favorite shows (first musical I ever saw at six years old when my church did it) but it's too avant-garde to be taken seriously, for lack of a better explanation.
P.S. - www.godspellpage.com is a great source for the show.
There's photos of the the Toronto cast (Garber, Radner, Levy, Short) and original off-Broadway production.
I absolutely disagree. Most of the productions I've seen in big houses generally lose their steam, but those in smaller theatres are usually wonderful. The 2000 revival was fabulous and high-energy, as was a production I saw at Wagner College years ago (keep your eyes open for Emily Falvey, who should be famous). I can't really fathom how you find it "boring" if done innovatively and with heart. If you just don't like the show, I respect your opinion.
Yes, Tom's page is quite good.

Sometimes the parables get a little preachy for me. I don't know. I find it a turn off.
Ultimately it's really just meant to encourage a loving community, but I can understand why you might feel that way.
I was the sound designer for a production of Godspell. The director set it in the current day and the characters all had some form of post traumatic stress disorder. It was really intresting how he staged the show and surprisingly it was good and got good reviews.
The show had moments/flashbacks that showed each character and their past traumas(some overlapping) and how they came together.
I was the first who was set dead against the idea, when I heard it...but the director really thought it out and staged it well.
Who knew?!
I actually thought the 2000 revival was lifeless...

I loved the movie. Even after doing a totally revamped Godspell (script-wise), I loved this movie.
It says Keds.
