I want to see Grey Gardens on 1/31. It is listed as KIDS NIGHT. I assume this means that kids are encouraged to attend. However, I hate children at the theatre ( I mean that in the nicest way.) Do you think I need to worry about kids at Grey Gardens? Would they even go? I just don't want my cathartic arch ruined by snotty kids. Any input from you would be great. Thanks. I never heard of KIDS NIGHT. I'm not from NYC.

Kid's Night is an annual promotion where a child (under 18 ) gets admitted free when accompanied by an adult paying full price. Most Broadway shows participate. Not sure how many parents are going to choose GREY GARDENS to take their kids to, but I imagine a few will.
Thanks Margo.

Imagine a theatre full of kiddies at The Vertical Hour or The Little Dog Laughed.
Some shows are just not good ideas for any kind of kid's night.
I am cool with a few teens being present, so I am hoping that is all that is at Grey Gardens. I don't mean to sound like a Grinch but even when I was seeing BATB, Tarzan, Lion King, and Wicked the little kids really annoyed me with their talking, climbing and screaming. I know I come across as a troll, maybe my ears are too sensitive. I am all for a Teens Night on Broadway, but kids. OK, I'll stop now. I am sure many kids will have fond memories of being taken to a show and I don't want to be a meanie. I just hope most parents shy away from Grey Gardens that night b/c I got a great seat.
I can't imagine parents wanting to take little kids out to see Grey Gardens. I love it, but if I had seen it as a nine year old, I might have fallen asleep or acted really obnoxious. I preferred flashy shows like ALW (though I don't like it anymore, Cats will always have a special place in my heart for being my first musical) or Disney stuff back when I was a little kid.
But anyway, I don't think you'll have that much of a problem with kids. When I saw Grey Gardens last month, I and a few other college students were the youngest people there.

I was such a gay little show princess as a kid, I would have LOVED it.
Good Point WalkOn. Had someone brought this little theatre queen to GG, I would have been mesmerized by Little Edie and not made a peep.
Actually, at any given show I see it's usually obnoxious adults who are the problem, not kids...but I can see what you're worried about.
I wouldn't be worried about little nuisances at "Grey Gardens". Because it's Kid's Night I suppose it's technically more probable that some kid(s) in there would be annoying, but I tend to think that the kinds of children parents would even consider taking to "Grey Gardens" would be very good about it.
And it's basically a statistical fact that patrons at "Grey Gardens" are more respectful and experienced theatergoers. In the recent New York Times article about eating in theaters, they asked 50 people at "Hairspray" and 50 people at "Grey Gardens" about the recent rule allowing more food into the theater. Most of the 50 surveyed at "Hairspray" liked the rule thought food had always been allowed; only 4 out of 50 at "Grey Gardens" thought eating during a show was even a good idea. (Thank you, New York Times, for legitimizing our elitist show queen sentiments.) Food is a slightly different topic than little kids, but it definitely points out a trend and I thought it was an interesting tidbit.

*Gasp* I am Hurt
And for your INFO, I am 12 and will be attending Grey Gardens on Kids Night.

I think the Edies would have scared the hell out of me as a young tyke.
...either that, or reminded me of close relatives.
I sat through the first national tour of 1776 as a nine-year-old and was mesmerized by every second of it.
I still remember it vividly.
Then again, Jefferson didn't have his knickers tied around his head, adorned with a pin...
My friend is taking her 13 year old to see it on Kids Night. She just viewed that as a discount. You should be fine.

I smell a sequel!
Don't worry about 6 year olds at Grey Gardens. I'm sure that some younger fans of musical theatre around 15 or 16 will be there though. There are some people out there of that age that know more than Rent and Wicked.
I was eight years old the first time I saw a Broadway show. My mother took me to see Richard Kiley in the revival of Man of la Mancha. I remember watching awestruck wearing my first real tie (I STILL can't go to the theatre without a jacket and tie, when did theatre become a casual experience?).
Anyway, it changed my life, and a lifetime's love of theatre was born. On the other hand, I was also one of those 8 going on 30 kids and behaved myself. If I had started climbing the seats, talking, or crawling in the aisles, well... Cervantes' Inquisition wouldn't have compared to what I would have faced when I got home :)
What Kids Night at Grey Gardens should mean is that my 70-something mother should be able to take her 40-something kids to see the show. What a marketing coup for that particular show.
