In the lead-up to the opening night of "Lestat", Gregg Maday (president of Warner Bros. Theater Ventures) mentioned a few upcoming projects (which the company would be developing): "Charlie & The Chocolate Factory" (since Warner Bros. own both movies, it'll be interesting to see which one they take to the boards), "HARRY POTTER" (Yep, scary. But I think it can be a kind'a 21st century Ring Cycle - if any of you here have heard of that legendary Wagner opera; Me, personally, if it was to be done, I'd HOPE they'd do it as a stage "play" spectacular WITHOUT any songs. It would just be HORRIBLE as a musical, IMO) and...
"BATMAN"
Legendary composer and songwriter, Jim Steinman, (creator of Meat Loaf's "Bat Out Of Hell" saga, Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart", the phenomenal German musical "Tanz der Vampire" and collaborator with Andrew Lloyd Webber on "Whistle Down the Wind") was first announced to create music & lyrics for this project, in 1998. Maday still says its in development. All other reports say it has been cancelled
This intriguing lost musical would have been staged as an out-of-town try-out in 2004, coming to Broadway in 2005; but Warner Bros. trialed their new "venture" with the dreaded LESTAT and, alas, Batman was never staged. Also, Steinman's musical "Dance of the Vampires" was trashed on Broadway which hindered all interest from Warner Bros. executives. Which is sad...
His score for the piece, from the demos I've heard, is one of the most heart-breaking I've ever heard in my life. It's like Rodgers & Hammerstein meets the 80s popera epics, and you can hear demos at the Multimedia section of www.jimsteinman.com
ALL details concerning the musical, (NO THIS IS NOT AN AD: I am an avid musical theatre fan, and can't resist promoting one of the most beautiful scores I've ever heard!) can be found at the DARK KNIGHT OF THE SOUL tribute to BATMAN THE MUSICAL:

I'd like nothing MORE to see this done one day, at least recorded as a concept album
EDIT: Tim Burton was going to direct this, as well
