I've known Vicki Clark for a very long time, so I knew about The Light in the Piazza from its first production at the Intiman, but I didn't fall in love with it until I saw it on Broadway.

OMG i cant say enough about her u guys i just cant wait until she blows u all away and makes u love piazza even more

It's great to see so many responses.

I think I officially became hooked on Piazza when I saw the Opening Night video on broadway.com. (I watch the majority of the videos, it helps me learn about the shows that have just opened, but I had heard about the show, and I was very interested to see what it was about.) The songs were so beautifully written and sung, and even through this little preview, it was very evident. I think it was Passeggiata that originally got me so interested in the show.

I am also a Latin major, and so anything doing with Italy is interesting to me. My sister is an opera major, so I've heard plenty of things sung in Italian, so that was also very interesting to me.

Before the actual OBCR came out, there were those four songs that you could hear through the internet. That is all I listened to, I would come onto the computer just to hear the songs. Then, I got my OBCR the day it came out, and I was so excited! It's tradition for me to sit there and go through the entire show from start to finish. At this point, who knows how many times I've listened to the OBCR?

The rest... is history

Feel free to continue to answer questions, but I'm going to ask another question:

What is your FAVORITE song in Piazza? CHOOSE ONLY ONE, and explain why if you so desire.

*shoots daggers at JKor* YOU KNOW I CAN'T ANSWER THAT QUESTION!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I had to pick one at this very moment, though, it would have to be Lets Walk. I love the Vicki/Mark dynamic, and the song is beautifully reflective. And the orchestrations on it give me chills.

Overall, my favorite song is "Fable". It's such a journey and it sums up the entire show in one gorgeous bit of music and lyrics. *faints*

But, right now, my favorite song is "The Light In The Piazza". Partly because I finally figured out what it was about. The following was posted on my blog(s) this morning:

"Yesterday I finally realized what this song is about. When I first heard it I thought I wouldn't know until I saw the show, that somehow it's meaning was wrapped up in the plot, but it really isn't that complicated.

The Light in the Piazza isn't literally the sunlight that peeks over the tops of the old and beautiful buildings in Firenze to spread its warmth over the city. It's that feeling. It's the feeling that's completely indescribable. That feeling when you realize "I love you" isn't strong enough. The feeling that comes when you say "I love you" and wonder why it doesn't carry the weight of your heart. And you search for a word, any word -- any number of words that may, perhaps, convey your meaning. Maybe you find them. Maybe you don't.

Clara found her Light in the Piazza, but the words are different for everybody and the search for them is exhausting. It was Clara's simplicity that made it so easy for her to find. Don't use your head, trying to find the words in your dictionary-like vocabulary . . .

Use your heart."

'Fable' is my overall favourite as well, but I also have a soft spot for 'Dividing Day' as Victoria Clarks rendition had me absolutly spellbound. It wasn't until I started to applaud that I realised I had been holding my breath for the nearly the entire duration of the song.

Though your argument for the title song was very persuasive - I didn't get it's meaning until I saw Kelli O'Hara sing it live and was swept away by her performance. In fact, I may have to go and listen to it right now... re: Piazza [enLIGHTist] Love Thread

I listen to the OBC recording all the time. The music runs through my mind during random times of the day, and it brings a smile to my face. What's strange for me is that I didn't fall in love with it during the performance. In fact, I wasn't really moved by Clara and Fabrizio's relationship on stage - not sure why. But the first time I heard "Say It Somehow" on the recording, I thought it was one of the most romantic songs I had ever heard. Kelli's voice is magnificent. I still can't figure out why I didn't respond to the live performance as much as I did the recording. Did anyone else have a similar experience?

I sort of understand what Madison means about not responding to seeing the performance the first time around. There was a huge gap between my first visit and second visit to PIAZZA, and it was really only at the 2nd one and those after where I was really moved by the show. Maybe it was just because I already knew what was going to happen and what I had to look forward to. *shrugs*

As for JKor's q... picking only one favorite song leads me to "Love To Me." For me, it is the most beautifully touching and romantic song EVER. Ever, ever, ever.

I wrote to Kelli O'Hara, and I got a wonderful response back. I told her about the enLIGHTists, and at the end of the letter she had written,

"Thank you for the Enlightists"

It was beautifully stated.

That was cute!

My favorite song is probably Love to Me, because it is just beautiful & emotional. I can't even imagine my reaction if someone sang that song to me [especially if they had as gorgeous of a voice as Matt!]

There was a lot of love for a while, but it seems to have dwindled down. Perhaps it was because lost two of the Piazza triumvirate, but Vicki is still there and holding strong!

I'm currently preparing my 8th trip to see the show. Some people would say that I'm crazy, that it's superfluous and that it's a waste of money. I figure I could always do heroin instead, I have no qualms returning. I'm drawn back consistently, by the score, the performances (I think the fact that the roles are being reinterpreted successfully by the replacements is a testament to the strength of the piece) and the emotional impact it has on me. And even now, the tiniest discovery brings the utmost joy each time I revisit it live or on disc. Thankfully it's found an audience and is still playing - and while it's around, I'm going to take full advantage.

Alla belleza della vita
