What happens next?

IMHO the following musicals should be allowed to die peacefully and go to show-heaven :We Will Rock You, Grease (except for some lost Japanese tourists is there still anyone paying money for this ?), Thriller Live (ghastly), Dirty Dancing, Blood Brothers, Jersey Boys, All the Fun of the Fair.
With Hair, Sister Act and Oliver! gone that would create enough space for new shows.
Chicago, Mamma Mia and a few others I'd like to stay a bit longer so not to create a black hole What happens next?
Oh, and could someone please perform an abortion on Shrek ?

What happens next?

Well Fun of the Fair closes in 3 weeks. I agree with you, apart from Blood Brothers, and I think Jersey Boys has another good year in them yet.

I kinda think Chicago should join the list too.

What happens next?

I forgot about Me and My Girl incoming after its regional run. Don't think its secured a theatre yet...

Rebecca is heading to The Palace at some point.

Chicago I think could close next year along with Jersey Boys.

I think Cameron's "Barnum" is pretty much on hold until they get a star on board, so far John Barrowman, Michael Ball and Neil Patrick Harris have said they are booked solid to at least 2012... so don't expect this anytime soon!!

I heard A funny thing is next into The Geilgud if it can be done in time...

Smokey Joes wants a transfer, but I can't see this happening. Aspects of Love could also come in yet before the year is out...
#29

What happens next?

Could Smokey Joes work at the Trafalgar Studios after the Willy Russell Season?

The Wyndham's/Duke of York's/Trafalgar (unless Ghost Stories extends) needs a new tenant from November and Novello/Noel Coward/Gielgud/Comedy from late January. I can't see Dreamboats extending into the new year either but we shall see.

I also HOPE on the play front that we get Fences for a limited run.

What about Aspects at the Playhouse ? I find it the perfect theatre (small, but not too small) for the ChocMen Productions.
A couple of good plays are indeed very welcome. If only Denzel Washington could be brought to the West End with Fences or Exit the King with Susan Sarandon and Geoffrey Rush

Let's bring back some REALLY talented people on the West End stage instead of those who came 127th in some stupid "reality" tv-show.
Some of the casts of today's shows read like a Who's Who of Talentless Hacks on the London Stage.

That's my rant of the day.

I agree philitalia, the playhouse is great for the Menier productions, La Cage fit in there perfectly.

The new play season (Death Trap, Yes Prime Minister, Onassis, Krapp's Last Tape, Birdsong) is very good in my opinion. I can't wait for Death Trap.
#32

What happens next?

I agree with philitalia that most of those shows need to go, and Shrek needs to close on Broadway and never move anywhere else.

I'm hoping for Next to Normal to come to the West End and possibly a new production of Rent.

Apparantly (well, at least that's what I read) Dreamworks kept pumping money into Shrek on Broadway just to "prove" to Disney that they can also produce a hit show. The show was bleeding money, but Dreamworks' pride and wallet was huge.
And now they're bringing this horror to Drury Lane ... even Mel Brooks knew not to bring Frankenstein Junior to London.

Aaah now I really liked Young Frankenstein, it's a damn site better than half the stuff showing in the West End at the moment. We could also do a lot worse than Shrek, as i've said before some of the songs (just some!) and some great examples of contemporary musical theatre.

#35

What happens next?

Sorry, the name was Young Frankenstein. My partner is Italian and they call it Frankenstein Junior in Italy.
There's always a danger in adapting cult-films for the stage.
#36

What happens next?

But when Disney create a musical, the films they're adapting were originally musicals and some of the best animated films of all time. Shrek wasn't a musical and can hardly be compared to films such as Beauty and the Beast.
#37

What happens next?

True ... I was skeptical, but pleasantly surprised when I saw Beauty and the Beast. Also Mary Poppins is a very nice family show. Truly well-made.

I agree disney can make a musical but from what I've seen of Shrek the songs aren't that good and the costumes look amatuer.

What's the thinking with Addams Family? It's only successful on Broadway because of Nathan Lane - the show itself is a mess. Who would they cast in the leads for the West End?
Faced with these Loreleis, what man can moralize!

What happens next?

I'll go and see it on Broadway in November. Apparantly, if you switch off your brain (except the vital functions) it's quite good fun.

What about Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne ? West End audiences don't mind if the leads cannot act or sing.

ps. Just realized ... they've got the perfect kids as well to be in the show

Simon Cowell can be Uncle Fester

Or Nathan Lane could transfer with it...what am I saying!? I don't want this to transfer!
#43

What happens next?

The Addams Family is a great show! Certainly about ten times better than Shrek. Loved the score, loved the humour, loved the performances - especially Carolee, Bebe and Jackie.

What happens next?

Would it work with a British cast ?
I think it's so American it could only work with well-known Americans as leads ... or am I wrong ?
#45

What happens next?

Well, Lane transfered with The Producers.

But was he more emotionally attatched to that than Addams?

I wonder what HE thinks of the show, and whether he likes it...
#46

What happens next?

I wish they would relax those rules and make it easier for casts to transfer between London and NY.
#47

What happens next?

They have been relaxed an awful lot in recent years.
#48

What happens next?

I honestly don't think it needs Lane. Though he was very good as Gomez, he was not fantastic and was overshaddowed by most of the rest of the cast IMO.

bob8rich, we're going to have to disagree. I thought Shrek was MUCH better than The Addams Family. Jeannine Tesori's score is infinitely superior to the mishmash of styles concocted by Andrew Lippa. In fact I thought Shrek was a damn good show, period. I think London audiences are going to be pleasantly surprised.

What happens next?

I haven't seen the Addams family yet so I cannot judge ... but listening to the cast recording I have to agree that there's a blend of styles (a few too many) - and there's even some music stolen from other scores ("Full disclosure" resembles Kander and Ebb a bit too much).

Nevertheless I hear a lot of people do have a good time during the show.
