What happens next?

Just wondering if anyone has any predictions for whats going to happen in the coming year, in the west end?

With WOZ and Shrek opening it seems the big musical houses are all booked up, especially with shows like Chicago and We Will Rock You staying where they are.

I know this will only be rumour but I love hearing what might happen!

Bit late in the year now, for anything new this year musically, already been announced for this year is 'Passion', 'Fela' and 'Love Story'.

For next year 'Shrek' and 'Wizard of Oz' you already know about, but heard a whisper that 'The Addams Family' will replace 'Love Never Dies'.

Sadly, unless the entire mindset of West End producers performs a u-turn, we will continue to get loads of second or third rate dross. The West End is way behind Broadway at the moment in quality musical theatre and generally when we get anything come across, we don't get the best that Broadway has to offer.

Also getting Million Dollar Quartet next year from Broadway.

Lend me a Tenor is a possibility too, as is Ghost. And fingers crossed Rock of Ages!!!

Yes, Mark, like I said - second and third rate dross LOL.

Rock of Ages is QUALITY! A really great show.

We don't know what Lend me a Tenor will be like yet, maybe it will surprise.

And with MDQ, well atleast we are getting SOMETHING from the past NYC season.

But rthat's just my point - London has to settle for just "something" from the Great White Way. None of the genuinely quality musicals of recent years have made it across (other than Spring Awakening - and then they cocked up the marketting of that): eg. THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, NEXT TO NORMAL, AMERICAN IDIOT, SPELLING BEE, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS. And even worse than that - no new quality British musicals have been produced on the West End in recent years. I really do despair for the future of musical theatre in the UK - and to me musical theatre should be more than just pandering to pop culture.

What happens next?

Shrek in Drury Lane just says it all. The West End is in a pitiful state.
I thought Love Never Dies was going to be re-worked and re-open ? Maybe it could work at the Palace. I don't like the Adelphi.

PS Cameron Mackintosh not ripping us off next season ?

Watch out for Betty Blue Eyes, coming to a Delfont Mackintosh theatre soon (if it actually happens haha).

And apparently we'll be getting the Color Purple here next year...

"Watch out for Betty Blue Eyes, coming to a Delfont Mackintosh theatre soon (if it actually happens haha)."

If Cameroon is on board, one thing is for certain, it will !00% happen. This will go into The Prince Edward.
#14

What happens next?

Color Purple ain't happening...I'd doube massively that Million Dollar Quatet would transfer considering its close to closing on Bway!

Betty Blue Eyes is opening at The Novello...

The Aldwych has a new tenant coming in...

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory adaptation are eyeing the Prince Edward but not until 2012

Lend me a Tenor is incoming for Feb 2010

Nederlander wants Love Never Dies out for Adams Family, but we'll see what happens there...

Stage Entertainment want their Shaftesbury back so are wanting a new blockbuster in their for Autumn 2011

A revival of a sassy dance musical is coming in too...

Passion could transfer for a limited season before Elenor Rodger has to go to Broadway for Evita

Follies at The Haymarket ...

Promises, Promises wants a London run, but they need to find the stars

Lots will still develop in for 2011, but its already looking to be a bumper year with Shrek and Wiz or Oz bringing in the revenue

What happens next?

Phantom, all this information sounds very promising. I had completely forgot about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! I also wonder whether Matilda will transfer from the RSC.

MDQ is already casting for London and I do think it will go ahead.

Interesting regarding the Aldwych having a new tenant. I would be very interested to hear what is going there as it is a great venue.

A sassy dance musical? A New Blockbuster at the Shaftesbury? Tell us more!!!

What happens next?

Weren't Stage Entertainment linked to GYPSY?
#18

What happens next?

Anythinggoes2 you seem to be well-informed so I have a few questions for you- hopefully you can answer.
If Stage entertainment wants the Shaftesbury back what about Flashdance ?
If the Nederlanders want Love Never Dies out (I thought ALW co-owned the Adelphi)... what about the Broadway production? That was supposed to be at a Nederlander theatre. I hear talk of lawsuits. I think Drury Lane is better suited for The Addams Family, so if Shrek doesn't stay too long ....
Any chance of anything new at the Dominion and at the Piccadilly?

What happens next?

I was hoping for a Matilda transfer too...

Assuming the news about the Aldwych is true - is Dirty Dancing closing or going elsewhere? I'd be happy if it disappeared altogether, but I thought it was still doing fairly solid business?
#20

What happens next?

I can confirm some of what AnythingGoes2 says is definitely true. Which bits, though, I can't say...

What I will say is that the MDQ transfer has been on the cards for a good couple of months now so I genuinely think that the show's poor sales on Broadway have little to do with the likelihood of it getting here, especially as it already has a theatre lined up.

I'm hoping for a Matilda transfer too (the RSC have put up a video talking to the people behind the most recent workshop) but it's early days yet. I'll be seeing it in Stratford hopefully.

What are Stage Ent tied to at the moment? Looking at their Dutch original shows, I suppose they could always bring over THREE MUSKETEERS but I don't think the music would sell that well over here. CISKE DE RAT won't come this close to OLIVER!'s run, and it's too soon for PETTICOAT to make it over.

philitalia, I THINK that Flashdance is only booking for a limited season? I'm sure I read that somewhere, but it may have been bollocks.
#21

What happens next?

Flashdance is definitely playing for a limited period, but if it is by chance a hit, I am sure the tenants would be happy for it to continue.

The Shaftsbury or Prince Edward would be a good fit for Promises, Promises.

If half the rumours are true on here, then I think we are all agreed we have great theatre coming up?
#22

What happens next?

I'm starting to look forward to the new season ... for the first time in years.
Joop Van den Ende and his Stage Ent have done fantastic things for theatre on the "continent". The man deserves huge respect. Thx to him (and his money)we get a lot more broadway and west end musicals(and other shows) translated into Dutch, German, ...

In bringing original shows Stage Ent. they are not so great (remember Cyrano the musical on Broadway?).
Ciske is too Dutch, story-wise and culturally, ... I don't think it'll work outside Holland, but J. Van De Ende is not scared of taking financial gambles, so who knows.

What happens next?

David Ian wanted to transfer Gypsy in, he co-produced the Broadway run with Patti LuPone and currently holds the rights to stage it in the UK. David Ian wanted to bring it to The Shaftesbury over the Summer to fill the gap between Hairspray and Flashdance - but Patti wanted about 10 staff to come with her and was far too expensive considering it would have had to be a limited run, so it was put off. David Ian still hasn't given up hope... so who knows? Just don't hold hold your breath!

With MDQ, I have heard rumours about it, but last I heard the backers are pulling out, so I unless some like Bill Kenwright picks it up, tours it and brings it in, I can see it happening, but who knows...

philitalia....The Adelphi is co-owned by Really Useful and Nederlander. When LND came about Really Useful signed a deal with Nederlander to have this theatre and also a theatre on Broadway. The show has flopped and Nederlanders are very annoyed as they are loosing money at The Adelphi and now have an empty theatre on Broadway. Nederlander want to now forget about LND and are keen to put in Adams Family to the Adelphi as they want the show to transfer.

Flashdance is a limited season, obviously if its a huge hit and nothing else emerges to enter the Shaftesbury, it will stay... but Stage Ents are mulling over lots of ideas. New, playing abroas and revival. They could come on board as producers for Matilda and bring this in...

Dominion will hold onto WWRY, it sells, cheaply, but that does it for them. Plus it needs something big, I don't think there is anything thats "big" coming along...

What happens next?

"If half the rumours are true on here, then I think we are all agreed we have great theatre coming up?"

Most definitely! Looking ahead in the next 12 month we already have these 100% confirmed:
Flashdance, Passion, Love Story, FELA!, Wizard of Oz, Shrek

These semi-kinda-sorta confirmed
Betty Blue Eyes, Million Dollar Quartet, Lend me a Tenor, Rock of Ages, Me and My Girl, Follies

Possibilities in the next 2 years:
Ghost
Sweeney Todd (Michael Ball)
A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the forum (Omid Djalili)
Rebecca
Dreamgirls (Cam Mack)
Song and Dance (current tour expanded)
Chess (upcoming tour)
Bridget Jones
Viva Forever (Spice Girls musical)
Promises
Xanadu
Barnum (Cam Mack still wanting to do this)
Little Women (Strallen Sisters)

There is so much that has been rumoured to be incoming to London, but it usually turns out that most things don't come off What happens next?.

What happens next?

Is Me and My Girl coming back ?
Wow ... I had a great time with that one ... although that was 20 years ago. I wonder if it still works and if I'd still like it.

I do hope Promises Promises and the Addams Family make it to the West End. Preferably with the Broadway casts (or at least the principals). It would liven the place up.

I'd be sorry to see LND go (especially since Karimloo and Borgess are giving a fantastic performance), but if it's not making money ... ALW should return to doing what he does best : composing - and let Cam Mac take care of the production.
