Of course, lyricist Ed Kleban HATED the song. And kind of rightly pointed out that it's plopped into the middle of the show and comes out of left field and has no real raison d’être other than being the hit single.

A hit single I LOVE by the way.

There was a point in '75 when every guest on every afternoon chat show seemed to sing that song. I recall a particuarly emotive vein-popped performance by Mr. Hall Linden on The Merv Griffin Show.

I do like to waste bandwidth, tho, jason.

And I love Hal Linden.

Actually the song is towards the end of the show.

Did anyone see Ethel Merman when she played Morales? I think they taped her singing "What I did for Love" for the LOVE BOAT.

For those who are honestly wondering, "What I did For Love" is from A Chorus Line. It's a great song (one of my faves, even).

Does anyone else think it would make more sense for Cassie to sing this song? I feel like we are most invested in her story by the end and she is the one who we get to visibly witness giving up something for her love of dance. She talks about how dance is all she knows, "Music and the Mirror," etc. Plus, if she is the "main" character why does she only have one solo and Diana gets two?

Yes, I'm pretty sure the producer and writer and assorted power brokers behind the scenes of the movie of "A Chorus Line" think so.

there is no lead in "a chorus line"...there are people with more lines, more songs, or solos, but it is an ensemble show. If you did it by lines...paul would be the lead...songs? Diana, if you did it by witty/comedic lines...Shelia and/or Bobby.

Diana sings the song because her best friend just went down (paul with his knee injury) and the reality is a little closer to home for her. While everyone else in the scene is saying they all need to find other things to do (bobby says, "go on...pick another career")...Diana is the spitfire who says there is nothing else she could imagine doing, ever since she was a little girl.

"I rememeber when I used to stand outside that stage door and watch all the girls come out in the their make up and eyelashes, and think, 'god I'll never be that old...I'll never be old enough to come through a stage door', but deep down, I KNEW that I would, and I've come this far and I am NOT giving up now".

that's why she sings "what I did for love".
