Of course, lyricist Ed Kleban HATED the song. And kind of rightly pointed out that it's plopped into the middle of the show and comes out of left field and has no real raison d’être other than being the hit single.
A hit single I LOVE by the way.
There was a point in '75 when every guest on every afternoon chat show seemed to sing that song. I recall a particuarly emotive vein-popped performance by Mr. Hall Linden on The Merv Griffin Show.
