CLAYTON HAMILTON, "Theory of the Theatre"
"I think theater ought to be theatrical ... you know, shuffling the pack in different ways so that it's -- there's always some kind of ambush involved in the experience. You're being ambushed by an unexpected word, or by an elephant falling out of the cupboard, whatever it is."

samiam,
true you weren't nasty-but another poster claimed that "we" weren't-and the majority of posters were just out & out mean...I've been lurking for some time & it just seems like most here are more negative than positive-nothing personal...

I know a dresser is a piece of furniture, but what is a theater?
Neither a borrower nor a lender be...unless that's mine in the first place.

Question: A friend of mine in a touring Broadway production told me he has to tip the dressers after every show. Why is this? That was the first time I had heard that. I assume, maybe, they use local people from each city they are in and that's part of the deal??

i just laughed harder and harder as i got closer to the bottom of this thread .... there should be a book "theatre for absolute dummies" I just took a 9 year old to a show who read the entire "playbill" and then the credits and guessed most of their jobs correctly.

Tipping is customary. If you are going to be in a broadway show, expect to tip your dresser, and hair/make-up person.

Then if a stagehand does a really good job, how come they don't get tips?
Or a follow spot operator?

On Broadway the lowest paid stagehand makes $10/hour more than a dresser...and yes, you can call us costumers....or wardrobe....
And, the stagehands don't have to handle an actor's sweaty laundry.
