I had to laugh when I went to the wikipedia link above and found this:
The musical was brought back to Broadway [1] in March of 2006 with Alan Cumming playing the lead as MacHeath, singer Nellie McKay as Polly, Jim Dale as Mr. Peachum, Ana Gasteyer as Mrs. Peachum, and singer Cyndi Lauper playing "pirate" Jenny Diver. Previews were universally spectacular with The Village Voice proclaiming "...it reminds us of a time when musicals were actually good, and not just a good time."
