I have been reluctantly avoiding Brooklyn because this board has killed it. I am a broadway equity veteran 20+ years (many of you have seen me) and I finally saw the show. Granted it was not typical 42nd street but it was entertaining. There is no way that anyone who knows broadway would kill this show. Typical it is not..... but entertaining, yes.

PS Bruce it was great to see you last night. Happy New Year all.

This is no lie..... I recieved 8 PM messages saying that they agree and loved Brooklyn but are afraid to say it on this board. Is that what you people want?

I'd say it was the reviews that killed it. Me, I'd rather spend my $100 seeing something else.

Well, I don't want the show to die or anything. I didn't like it and I think there's better stuff that could be on (BARE, for instance), but I don't wish for the closing of any show. I don't think anyone should be afraid to post what they think, but I know the board can be hostile at times. But really, it's an on-line message board--what is there to be afraid of? If you like the show, post. Just post something with substance, not "omg, i totally love this show." Why do you love the show? What gives it merit?

The songs in Brooklyn aren't theatrical in nature and that just bugs me. And the lyrics are mundane.

Take Bare, similar type of music, but it works due to the theatricality of the songs.

I don't hate much, but I hated Brooklyn to the point where I gave away a ticket rather than sit through it again. Mostly I disliked the ludicrous story line, but I also disliked the screeching that was being passed off as singing by people who actually DO have terrific voices. I have nothing at all against any of the performers. It was the show I despised and the belt-it-all philosophy that drove the music. And I have not listened to the recording because, frankly, after the live experience, I have no desire to hear it again.

But that being said, I would never NOT go to a show because someone else on a message board panned it. Hey, I would have missed Prymate if I'd listened to everyone else.

And for the record, there WAS a bit of a backlash due to the intensity and volume of "Brooklyn" is the best show EVER that dominated the Main Board for far too long. You might've missed that dynamic play out if you weren't around all the time. At the time.

I wouldn't say that the songs aren't theatrical. I think they would be considered "theatrical" in the fact that they are big and powerful and entertaining. I WOULD say, though, that they don't always move the plot along, which is different than being theatrical, in my mind.

And yes, the lyrics aren't the greatest. I never understood why anyone bashed on this show. It's not the best in form or story, but it's not trying to be anything groundbreaking, and it's not trying to say something powerful. It is just meant to entertain an audience, and I think it achieves it's goal well. You're never going to please everyone.

I loved BKLYN. i was also hesitant to see it because of the reviews. But, i had the sample cd so I knew the singing was good. I thought it was great music and the storyline was cute. The music reminded me of RENT in that some songs had a beat to it that wasn't traditional broadway.

Well first off I feel everyone should have their opinions. Don't be afraid to state yours. I've recently added a couple of new threads where the people were much less thrilled with a show than I was LOL

As to Brooklyn, I didn't like the music at all. Bear in mind that I can only judge by listening to the music as I live in SD. However, to me that is the most important part of a show.

of course everyone on THIS thread is saying it's okay to post different opinions...but people are SOOO harsh when it comes to brooklyn I'd be afraid to say I liked it as well! Granted there were a few people who deserved that treatment, but it was still pretty ridiculous.
I saw Brooklyn a few weeks ago, payed twenty bucks and sat in the front row on stage right...my knee was literally crushed against the fake concrete slab that was on the stage. As a broadway musical, I didn't like it at all. But I thought most of the performers were ten times better than the material, and the only thing that saved it (for me) was when I started treating it more as a concert and stopped paying attention to the plot. But hey, what the hell do I know? Good luck brooklyn fans!

I saw them performing in Bryant Park, and let's just say that it's not eactly on my list of got-to-see shows.

Would a person who claims to be "... a broadway equity veteran 20+ years (many of you have seen me)..." also write "Granted it was not typical 42nd street but it was entertaining?" I guess, if after 20 years that person had never developed any critical faculties. "Not typical 42nd street?" Huh?

But I don't think a real equity veteran of 20+ years would ask "Does anyone know how to get an audio copy of Bare? I love the music." Any veteran would know where to get cast recordings, and no equity veteran would be asking about verboten bootlegs.

Finding Namo...

Why does working on Broadway immidietly make someone an expert on where to get cast recordings?
What's wrong with saying that 42nd street is a typical musical? There are big tap dance numbers, and cute feel-good songs. It's a pretty typical musical.

Come on, be fair.

I'm with Namo, this guy does not sound real at all. And anyone who has been in theatre in this town knows where to buy music.

You know what killed Brooklyn for the people of this board? ALL OF THE SHILLS that came on here hyping the show. Seeing threads ad nauseum on ANY show will drive the rest of the board nutty.

It is because of the shills (and bad reviews) that I have no desire to see the show--no matter how talented those performers are.
