What makes a show "Broadway"?

What makes a show "Broadway"?

Please excuse my naivete, but I was wondering what exactly makes a show a "Broadway" show as opposed to an "off-Broadway" show? Are B'way show only in certain theatres in New York? Is "off-Broadway" an official title, or can anyone open up a theatre in NYC and call themselves "off-Broadway"?

There are certain theatres in NYC that are recognized as "Broadway" theatres. I'd post a more detailed explanation, but I'm reallly tired.

It depends on the number of seats, and where the theater is located (between which streets)

there's nothing that makes a show "Broadway" except its needing to open in an eligible Broadway theatre with 500 seats or more...

Hah, I'm really glad I took an Invitation to Theatre class during first semester my freshman year. It was only then that I found out a basic fact on what makes a show an offical Broadway show.
