gavino, i know what you meant. people read into everything on these boards. just read over what you've written before you post i guess.

the only thing that ruins broadway for me are the snoots who turn their nose up at you in a theatre because they feel you're not worthy of being there. i understand they're the ones with the patron money and are helping keep the theatre alive, but really it is so rude and really ruins experiences for people!

but to say that a show or actor has ruined broadway would be inaccurate.

hear my song; it was made for the time when you don't know where to go, listen to the song that i sing, you'll be fine..

i know you didnt actually mean that they ruined broadway, anyway I do agree that movie musicals are not helpful to the sanctity of broadway and there is way too much disney.

This thread really is pointless. How could something misrepresent Broadway? Can you answer these questions, what is Broadway? And how is (such and such) misrepresenting it?

"It's just, I feel like those shows and things are
misrepresenting what broadway really is."

Broadway is about escaping from reality and being able to live in another world for 2.5 hours. Everyone has a different definition on what Broadway means to them, so to say one show misrepresents what Broadway really is doesn't make sense.

The great thing about Broadway is there are so many different things you can choose from: serious dramas, musical comedies, the list goes on. Whether you like the shows or not, shows like Rent and Wicked don't misrepresent Broadway.

>> the shows that actually make it to Broadway are the cream of the proverbial crop

I must ever so humbly disagree. That might have been true ten or fifteen years ago, but now Broadway is loaded down with pre-packaged shows that are designed to be nothing more than tourist trap musicals. They get mixed to pan reviews, and still play anyway because they're marketed to families who see a familiar corporate name and assume automatically that it's going to be good. And because their experience with this kind of theatre is so limited and because they shelled out so much for the tickets, they force themselves to enjoy it, whether or not they actually do. The cream of the crop can be found in countless other places, like regional theatre, which is where the real action is these days. Face it: "now playing on Broadway!" just doesnt have the panache it once did; why do you think Newsweek and Time so rarely talk about theatre anymore?

Look, this thread is about what makes Broadway look like a cliche. When people who aren't theatre fans think of Broadway, they think kick lines, phony sets, and cheesy musical numbers. And in the case of Phantom and Miss Saigon, they think chandeliers falling and helicopters descending to the stage. And those who are familiar with Broadway think of shows like Annie and Grease. Broadway isn't ruined but the public has the wrong idea of it. That is the point of this thread.

How YOU doin'?
