What musical received the most Tony nominations without a Best Musical Nomination?

Just Curious.

For those who thought NEXT TO NORMAL wouldn't have a life outside Broadway, well it's now playing in 4 cities, 9 different countries and has been translated into 6 languages.

Off the top of my head I know that Aida was nominated for 5 Tony Awards without getting a Best Musical nod.

I think "Big" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" both got five nominations but weren't nomianted for Best Musical.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Interesting question. Aida actually won 4 Tonys without being nominated for Best Musical, tying for the most awards that night.

How in the world did Legally Blonde get 7 nominations? No surprise it didn't win any.

After a quick cross-referencing of IBDB and TonyAwards.com it appears that Legally Blonde (as mentioned above) and Goodtime Charley in 1975 both had 7 Tony nominations without a nod for Best Musical.

A few others of note:

The original production of Camelot was nominated for 5 Tonys - but not Best Musical.

The Roar of the Greasepaint... - 6 nominations

Goldilocks - 5 nominations

The Act - 6 nominations
