I'm 21 - therefore not a teen, and not an Idina obsess-ee but I love Wicked.
I have been in love with MT since my childhood, so Wicked wasn't my first big love. It is not the only show I've seen and wasn't my introduction to theater...so where do I fit in?
I have a picture of Elphaba as me avata, I went to Idina's last show. It was uttlerly fantastic, the atmosphere was electric and was the best audience I've sat with at a show. Not *ashamed* to admit that...why should I be? Although quite often I feel like I should be and sometimes I play down my liking, it took me forever to get the guts to put a picture of Kerry Ellis is her costume up. A performer I admire more than the show.
I can understand people's dislike of some of the more obsessive fans, but is there any need to attack them for their liking of one show?
Feel free to tell me I don't like 'real' musical theater...I like Wikced and I'm admiting it freely.
"I read an issue of Every Day With Rachael Ray and in one section for teen cooking, they gave tips to make cooking fun. Here's one non-direct quote.
"Listen to music. Musicals like Hairspray and Wicked have fun, upbeat music."
Ugh."
haha thats great. shes a wack job.
Just because the material itself isn't happy doesn't mean that it doesn't make people happy.
"I'm afraid this isn't a happy musical, Little Sally."
"But the MUSIC'S so happy!"
Sorry, I had to.

I am not a teen and I do not even like Idina.
Wicked is not the greatest musical of all time, but it does not deserve endless bashing either. I would assume that teenagers do not have unlimited amounts to spend on a $110 dollar ticket every week. Since the show is sold out, some people (other than teens) are buying tickets and finding it entertaining.
Can we just respect people's opinions (even those of obsessed teens)?

I actually was just discussing this with one of my friends. I'm a high schooler, and LOVE musicals, for me, the more obscure the better. Now don't get me wrong, I love Wicked and RENT very much, I would rank them as some of my favorite shows. However, as an example of what you're reffering to in your question, I have a friend, let's call her 'Kit.' Now, when I met Kit she didn't know any Broadway. Thinking that Wicked and RENT are two very popular and relatable shows, I introduced them to her when we were sophmores. She now drives me crazy talking about how much of a Broadway fan she is, and loves theatre and loves to talk about about musicals, when those are stil the ONLY two shows she knows. For some reason i have trouble understanding, for all her talk, she isn't expanding her knowledge of shows. There's so much else out there! Anyway, the best i can come up with in answer to your question is this: high school is a very... wierd... stage. Everyone is trying to simutaneously (sp?) fit in and find themselves. Saying you like Broadway makes you different. Trust me, I get some wierd looks when I talk about the music I listen to. (How many high schoolers know shows like Grey Gardens and The Last 5 Years?) Anyway, Wicked and RENT are popular and well known enough that new musical fans can say that they like those shows without feeling like they're being wierd. They can say they like Broadway, butnot stick out too much. It's really kind of sad. That's the best i can do in answer to the question.
