We dote on our cat as if he were the Prince of Wales. My disdain for CATS has nothing to do with any disdain for cats.

devonian, I guess you and I ran in different circles back then. Yes, I had read the reviews from London that heralded the show as something avant-garde. Alas, the Emperor had no clothes. It was just one more reason to feel betrayed by the show. If it became a "prestige" hit in some quarters, that only made the insult worse.

I'm not disagreeing with you.  I didn't work on 'Cats' and obviously saw events from a London perspective and of course the way Cameron, especially, represented it in the UK was that America was desperate for the show to transfer.  That naturally was intended to add status to him and cachet to the product at home as well as abroad.

In retrospect we know how ALW and Cam Mac revolutionized the selling of a theatre "brand"-

(I often think of ALW in the 80's as the opposite of Franklin Shepherd:"he does the music thing very well, but other people do it better.  And he does the money thing very well, and nobody does it better"What's with the hatred of Cats?

- so to some extent ALW has been his own worst enemy, pushing every show as if it is the greatest, most innovative musical ever conceived, so that he ends up discrediting himself and evoking strong "hate" of his shows and what they are perceived to stand for.

Like 'Starlight Express', 'Cats' is best thought of as a kids/ family show, plain and simple.
