A DAY WELL SPENT (1835) was written as a one-act farce by the British Playwright Oxenford and took place in Great Britain.

In 1842, Austrian Johann Nestroy "freely adapted" original play and titled it EINEN JUX WILL ER SICH MAXEN.

This version takes place in a "small city" and "the capital"--no specific references to Vienna are given.

You are so very right that A DAY WELL SPENT doesn't take place in any specific city. My mind is foggy. The one and only time I saw it was in Austria, and the scenic design most definitely set the scenes in Vienna. I recall one scene that took place in the that magnificent amusement park there. The famous ferris wheel was in the background. Of course it was performed in German and I couldn't understand a word, but the body language and the farce was evident.
