Margo -

I agree with you on Dreamgirls and how the way the act ended was a bit disorienting. I can remember standing and cheering and then realizing that we were watching another number. (I saw it the day after Ms. Holliday left the show and people still went crazy) Happy to say that I did witness Ms. Pinkins stop the show with "Lot's Wife". I get goosebumps just thinking about it!

Another song that, although happens at the end of the 1st act, I feel "stopped" the show was "I Got Love" from Purlie. I can remember people going wild when that song was over.

Oh yeah, "I Got Love" was a big showstopper. So much so, that since Moore was stopping the show with it every night, an encore verse of it was added to the show as a way of acknowledging the applause.

I agree Margo, 100% ..."And I am telling you..." qualifies as a true showstopper. But Bennet apparently did not want it to stop the show. If the curtain had come down on that last note, would the audience have stayed there cheering and applauding until she returned? I guess we will never know.

I saw the show March 1982 and indeed the reaction was just as you described it. Amazing. And I was really REALLY pissed off when the cast album came out and cut the number, eliminated the lead in and robbed it of its power. Thank god they showed the whole thing on the 1982 Tony awards.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I would think 42nd Street might have the most show-stoppers/crowd-pleasers. Charity SHOULD have several.

But does anything really STOP the show like it used to? Yes, things get whoops and hollers durting applause, but does the show actually grind to a halt while we wait for the out of control audience to stop showing their enthusiasm?

Oh my goodness!! You're right Margo. They did add an encore verse. I remember now. I was about 10 or 11 when I first saw it.
