Hey Guys,
Any idea what will be on Broadway in August?

WICKED
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
THE LION KING
THE LITTLE MERMAID
MARY POPPINS
MAMMA MIA!
At the rate shows are unexpectedly closing, all the others are fair game at this time. As for new shows opening like 9 TO 5: The Musical, the revival of WEST SIDE STORY and the others... I wish them all the luck in the world.

Yikes!
That line up looks a bit sad. I know Shrek is coming for a bit, but chances are it will be gone in August.

Um, did you see the grosses they had last week at Shrek? Doubled the previous week's AND set the house record for a single day on the 29th.
If The Little Mermaid survived the dismal reviews it got, Shrek most definitely will.

Posted: 12/1/08 at 1:22pmThat is very true. It seems like the Little Mermaid was a bad idea by Disney. I would be very happy if Shrek is still around in August.

Posted: 12/1/08 at 1:24pmIn The Heights should be around... Hopefully. I think this crisis will be somewhat solved by then so I think some of the new shows can survive.

Posted: 12/1/08 at 1:28pmAll you can really do is wait and see. There are always new shows opening up, and also shows are closing quickly now. It is almost pointless to decide now on what to see 9 months from now. Not that it was a bad idea, just with the economy.

'The Little Mermaid' and 'Mary Poppins' aren't so much of a sure thing, and I wouldn't put... *lots* of money on 'The Lion King' being a sure bet. If Disney will kill 'Beauty & the Beast' after 13 years and 'Tarzan' after not very many, then they could do anything. Although at least there aren't any apparent new Disney musicals in the works that could encourage the closure of any of these three. Unless they get spooked and decide 'High School Musical' belongs on the Great White Way after all. XD
And it'd be nice if the global economic crisis were over and done with by next summer, but it's been in the making for something like twenty years, so while there might be some semblance of stability as people have come to terms with and started working around it, I'll be VERY shocked (but ever so grateful) if it's actually *over* by then.

Well, not even looking at that, it's got big name recognition and appeals to boys and girls alike. I stand by my statement that if The Little Mermaid has made it as long as it did on the crappy reviews it got, I have a feeling Shrek will be around for a while.
And yes, Thanksgiving is a traditionally high week, but the Black Friday grosses in retail still say that people are not spending a lot, so it's still a good sign that in this economy when many people cut back on travel plans and spending it made what it did.

Wicked, Jersey Boys, Mary Poppins, Phantom of the Opera, 9 to 5, Mamma Mia, Billy Elliot
Not sure if The Little Mermaid can survive...
I think West Side Story or Guys Dolls might be able...

I had trouble finding '9 to 5' tickets during the American Express pre-sale, judging from that it should still be around in August.

None of them.
Starting in August of 2009, all Broadway theaters will be turned into movie theaters, showing filmed versions of different Broadway musicals from all different time periods, even new musicals will be rehearsed and filmed and then released for 2 week periods. Tickets for all movie-shows will start at $59 and can be as much as $234. plus service charges. Since the performances will be filmed, autographed playbills, posters, and photos in which you can paste your own face next to the stars, will be sold in vending machines in the lobby following each showing, thus keeping the tradition of stagedooring alive, because thats really what Broadway is all about: autographs and photo keepsakes.

Posted: 12/1/08 at 6:14pmwishingonlywounds2 ~ If I'm not mistaken, with almost every show that's had an AmEx pre-sale, a good number of (often better) seats were released after the tickets went on sale to the general public. Seems like in most cases those tickets are in limited numbers so as not to punish the majority of people who don't have an AmEx card for whatever reason.

Posted: 12/1/08 at 6:19pmOh, well I just checked for the same date, being the general public can now buy tickets... it's offering a worse seat, the same seat was listed after I got mine (I checked back the same day I got the ticket to see if it pulled one of those things where it lists a better ticket after I bought the one listed as 'best available'.)

I haven't done an official study ~ it just seemed like that at least with Billy Elliot and Shrek people reported finding better seats after the pre-sale.
Perhaps it's being limited to one date that's the problem?
