My mother, sisters and I would watch "The Sound of Music" every single time it came on television. That's the absolute beginning of my interest. Then my mother took me to auditions for a local production of BEN FRANKLIN IN PARIS (which I didn't get, btw) and I realized there was a world on stage as well as film.
annie was my first movie theater experience. it's still one of my all time favorite movies. then a couple of events lead to my love for the theatre and movies:
like many of you, i watched annie, wizard of oz, everything julie andrews...i was born in NY but we moved to FL when i was 4, so i was always obsessed with the idea of New York. when i was in 1st grade, i performed in my school's talent show. while many kids got into groups and did little dances or whatever, i got onstage in a black leotard, fishnets, bowtie, satin tuxedo jacket (with tails), top hat and cane and sang ACAPELLA (as my mother tells the story, the music teacher offered to accompany me, but i declined saying, "then they won't hear me sing") to New York, New York. oh yeah, i was also wearing patent leather mary jane tap shoes.
when i was in about 4th grade, i had one amazing teacher (whom i am still in touch with)who gave me the push in the right direction. i was a chatterbox and very, um...active. while most teachers told my parents i talked to much and was always daydreaming... she told my parents i had something to say, and i wasn't being challenged creatively. so she got me the forms and set up an audition for the school of the performing arts, and in 5th grade i started in the drama program!!
in the drama program i met the next teacher who would change my life. I knew i liked drama class but figured it was a hobby type thing. then he showed me 2 things that changed my life. A video of the best of Gilda Radner, and he took us to see Les Mis. I have never been the same! that's when i knew this was what i wanted to be, what i wanted to do.
...When I first saw THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT as a kid (when it was released).
That's when I got into musicals. And I've been "stuck" on 'em ever since.
Before that, I'd seen The Wizard of Oz, Sound of Music, Chitty, Wonka, etc., like most of you ... not really thinking of them as musicals, but more as kid films (for me).
THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT changed me forever. That led to my love for stage musicals as a result.

Same for me with Grease. I just grew up on the movie. That in turn got me to give other musicals a chance & by the time I was like 10 I'd seen almost all the R&H musicals on film.
My dad was very involved with the local community theatre when I was little. He would often go to the theatre on Saturdays to do set construction and take my little sister and me along so we could "help." And of course I saw everything my mom deemed appropriate. I did my first show when I was 6. I like to tell people that I grew up in the theatre.

I think it started with my dad. He liked to watch Fred Astaire movies with me and I could not get enough of those. (I still can't.) Then it just grew to encompass more.
Seeing my high school's production of Bye Bye Birdie and Bette Midler in Gypsy on TV in the same week.

I've always loved movie musicals -- I was a total Disney kid. It wasn't until I was in sixth grade that I was exposed to Broadway musicals (my parents have never been fans of the arts). That year my sister's third grade class put on a production of Phantom of the Opera. We saw the show on tour in L.A. and I liked it, but it scared the crap out of me It was also around this time that I was first introduced to RENT, but I didn't like it because I didn't "get it" (I was a very sheltered child).
It wasn't until a few years ago when I was introduced to Wicked -- *ducks from flying objects* -- that I really took an interest in Broadway. I really liked Wicked until I gave RENT a second chance and fell in love with it. After that I became a BWW lurker and learned about other shows, and my Broadway obsession began.
well the only musc I loved for a LONG time was The Wizard of Oz. However I got into musical theatre with Les Mis. My sister had gone to see it at a high school and made me lsiten to it. after that I have become a big muscial-theatre fan. And I'm not looking back. :)
When my parents took me to see the 1997 National Tour of "The Wiz"....it was cool.

My parents are both lovers of musical theater and my father has been in numerous musicals so their love for musicals was instilled in me from little on. I would have to say a musical milestone would have to be seeing the movie "Oliver!" when I was 6. I loved the music so much and I also had a crush on Mark Lester..haha.

when i was in 5th grade, we watched "The Sound of Music" in music class. After that i fell in love with it and had my parents buy it for me so i could watch it as much as possible.
When I was four, my Oma took me and my sisters to see Beauty and the Beast. I don't recall much of the show, but I remember the castle scene towards the end with the Beast transformating. I really didn't take an interest in theatre until I was nine. Until then, I saw Beauty and the Beast, The Sound of Music and The Radio City Christmas Show. I heard of a musical version of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, and I wanted too see it for a long time. Luckily, I have a very nice uncle who got tickets, and I got to go. I have loved Broadway ever since. It was my obsession. It still is. I have overall seen 16 shows.

My friend came across "light my candle" on her computer, and couldn't figure out the meaning behind it, or what was going on. So she got the rest of the RENT cast recording, and loved it and told everyone, including me. So I listened to it, and have seen it twice since then. I've seen a bunch of shows in between too.
