My April trip up to NYC is looking bright. I'm looking into what shows to see now, though. I know "Wicked" is a definite, so I have a slot open for one more show. Here are some possibilites: Fiddler on the Roof, The Boy from Oz, AIDA, or Gypsy, again.
I'm not really interested in LSOH. I got the cast recording from Santa, and well, it's been out of it's case once since then. It just didn't click with me, or something. But thanks anyway for the suggestion.
I suggest Gypsy, but if you don't want to see it again, see Fiddler. It's something new, you might just love it.

I'd love to see Gypsy 5 more times if I could. I may just see that one again...and post message after message about my ticket purchasing fiascos again. Just for ****s and giggles.

PJ, from your list I would definitely recommend seeing The Boy From Oz, because Hugh Jackman is giving an amazing triple-threat performance that you won't be able to see on tour or after he leaves the show and goes back to his movie career in the fall. Gypsy, Aida, and Fiddler are all shows that you can see on tour and/or on future trips, and Bernadette does a lot of theater, but Hugh Jackman live on stage is a limited opportunity, and well worth seeing!
My 2nd choice recommendation would be Avenue Q, if you end up with another slot to fill, unless you don't like that score. I thoroughly enjoyed Wicked despite some flaws, and hope you have a great time there! Idina and Kristin are simply wonderful, and I'm sure that they'll stay with the show at least through the Tony Awards in early June. Does anyone know how long their contracts run? If they are for a year, their month long San Francisco run was in June 2003, but then they had a break before the Broadway opening in the fall, so I'm not sure how that would be calculated with the time off in the middle.
I'd like to add my recommendation for THE BOY FROM OZ - see it not only for HUGH JACKMAN'S amazing performance and way with the crowd - but also because it is an entertaining musical about show business.
I actually have no desire to see "Hairspray." I've seen the casts' performances on tv several times, and I can't stand the score for some reason. I don't know if it's just MJW's "voice" or what, but I can't even listen to the cast recording, let alone sit through the show. And YES, I know it's supposedly "great" and "fun," but I think it just looks like something I'd regret spending $$$ on. So far I'm pushing for Fiddler, Wicked, or AIDA. For some reason I'm getting quite interested in that show.
Yes I am quite aware that Marissa left the show months ago. But thanks anyway, Dollypop. The main point I attempted to get across, in a nice way, is that I really don't want to see that corny show. No pun intended, Corny Collins.
I saw Hairspray with Kathy Brier and although I absolutely LOVED the show, I have to say that she was my least favorite cast member. Just my opinion, of course ! And PJ, although I went crazy over Hairspray, I do respect your opinion not wanting to see the show if you don't feel like it. So, what about the most reccomended show in this post, the wonderful Boy from Oz ?
PJ, My suggestion is you make a pact with yourself to take your self off- and off off-Broadway to see some interesting theatre. Don't make plans. Just come to town and wing it. You just might be leaving town a whole new person because of your theatre going experiences.

PJ, it would mean planning w/out Tickemaster or Telecharge...it would mean reading TimeOut NY, for example, when you arrive and make selections based on one/two sentence blubs about what's interesting that week...it would mean on relying on your colleagues on BWW.com to refer you to theatre that those in-the-know are really seeing...it might mean a broadening of your NYC experiences. That's a big gamble against the predictable list of choices you've laid for yourself.
Bulldog, what do you personally recommend? Because I was already going to be doing what you just suggested when I have more time this summer. I always wing it with Broadway, but I'm really looking to see more plays and the like.
I would say see anything other than AIDA. That show just burned my eyes when it was brand new. I can't imagine what it would do to me now with this rotating cast they have.
I trust you Sherman...so I'll scratch AIDA off the "maybe list." Here are the remaining few: The Boy from Oz or Fiddler on the Roof. I'm already set on seeing Wicked, like I said, so I need to pick one more.
