What was the last OBCR you bought?

#25OBCR - original and revival of Man of La Mancha
Posted: 7/10/03 at 2:23am

Man of La Mancha with Brian Stokes Mitchell.

I alternate listening to this version and the first original Broadway cast recording with Richard Kiley in the lead.

Listening to the music ( with memories of both productions still on my mind) never fails to tug my emotions.

Magruder, funny you should mention the Mary Martin Hello, Dolly! and the Betty Buckley Promises Promises. Some years ago I bought the MM Dolly (on vinyl) through dress Circle in London, it was only recorded in mono or so I was told. About five years ago I found the BB Promises, Promises in a junk shop for 99 cents. This production was cast in the U.S. (principals), after the intial few months this cast returned to the States and became the first national company. Both are favourites still....on vinyl! which JCS recording did you get?? That could make a BIG difference in why you don't like it.

I think it was Thoroughly Modern Millie, but don't quote me on that.

I'm eagerly anticipating the new and complete recording of CHICAGO starring Melanie Griffith! Are they bringing George Hamilton back to play her Billy Flynn, or will it be Lou Gossett, Jr?

They are going to make a new cast recording for Chicago? It is about time.

They won't make a new cast recording of Chicago because they change casts the way most people change their underwear... (casts seriously have changed there on a daily basis). Personally I'd like to see Roxane Carrasco, Tracy Shayne (or Bianca Marroquin), Michele Pawk and Brent Barrett get in there and belt out a new recording, but sadly, that ain't happening any time soon.

I think the last OBC I bought was NINE

What about a "cross-over" recording of CHICAGO? You know, where opera singers record Broadway scores (They did it for CANDIDE and KISMET, just to name a few).

I'd suggest Marilyn Horne as Roxie Hart, Joan Sutherland as Velma Kelly, Luciano Pavarotti as Billy Flynn, David Daniels as Mary Sunshine, and Samuel Ramey as Amos. It'd work!

ON YOUR TOES
1983 Broadway Cast

I followed up on DollyPop's advice about the 20% sale at Footlight so I checked online and found this CD which I have been meaning to buy. This recording is never in stock at Tower Records anymore. So I went down to Footlight and bought it. It was their last copy. (The subway fare $4.00 ate up by 20% savings, lol).
