But I didn't have trouble understanding it back in the 80s when I didn't know every lyric.
I just loved it all the more this time knowing every lyric before it even started.
I loved the individual performances, the stage direction and the sets so much.

BOUNCE - wow that was hard to sit through.
THE VISIT was pretty bad too.

I'm not sure I was confused by them, but maybe confused at why I chose to stay for the 2nd act of either.

I had no idea what was going on during the entire production of Movin' Out.

Also, seeing CATS a second time this year didn't enlighten me one bit as to what the plot was.

I loved the JUMPERS revival.

Anything by Albee. I'm sorry, I know he's an influential genius, but I'm completely dumbfounded by his plays.

Margot...I loved the performances, however, I should've read the play before going to see it. I was tres confused.

Dracula ... but only due to the fact that it was so boring that it did not hold my attention.

DEFINITELY roar of the greasepaint, smell of the crowd.

I got that it was all "waiting for godot the musical" but even still. it wasn't smart enough to demand so much intelectual participation on behalf of the audience, lol.

In the Jungle of the Cities by Brecht. I sat through a very tedious production that was more about the "concept" than the script including a very loud jazz band performing literally in my ear. I had no clue what the show was about.

Also The Play About the Baby by Albee. Didn't get it at all, though I studied an early draft of the play before it was produced. I never saw it performed.

I know that a lot of folks were confused by the literary references and characters in "The Invention of Love". I did a little bit of background reading on it before seeing it the first time and I think this was why I loved it so much. (In fact, I ended up seeing it 4 times).

Mamie,

I saw INVENTION twice -- really terrific (and an incredible performance from RIchard Easton). The notes did help, though (they probably should have done the same thing with JUMPERS -- the friends I sent to see it and gave about five minutes of background info about it before, all really liked it ..... some of those who went in cold got a little lost).

Perhaps it was because I saw both shows early in their runs, but I was extremely confused in The Secret Garden and RENT.

I was very lost while watching the CATS video. However, now that I know there was no plot in the show, it makes so much sense. I now realize its nothing lol

City of Angels...I'm sure if it's done right, it's fine. I saw a really bad community theatre production of it and was like WTF. In theory, it sounds like a great idea

I agree about the ending of Phantom being confusing. The audience is happy that the murderer and kidnapper got away. That has always confused me.

La Boheme. I understood the basic plot line but it was a bit difficult to understand what was going on in the moment. It didn't help that everything was in Italian and you had to keep watching subtitles.

The first time I saw "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolfe", I was lost. I knew what I had just seen was amazing but was confused. Went home studied some essays on the play and now it is one of my favorite plays right behind True West. Albee can be confusing but once you learn what he was going for or see a production that makes it clear, its easier to see. I directed a production of The Sandbox my senior year in college and had to explain it to alot of people and some of the less open minded kids were like "well everyone did a good job but I didn't get it at all, it's such a show that you would do."

As far as POTO goes. I agree. during the Prima Dona Scene things get confusing because everyone is singing at the same time and the orchestra is loud and you just loose so many of the words no matter how good the sound system or singers are.

The most confusing show I ever saw was Neil Simon's I OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES.

Was it a Drama? A Comedy? A "Dramedy"? Proof that even Neil Simon writes bad plays? :)

I have to say i was most confused when i saw Movin' out. I mean the dancing was amazing and once i read the prgram i got more of it. It was just difficult with the always changing costumes to figure out who was who every time!

I found "Saturday Night Fever" very confusing.

Just kidding.

For me, it was "The Charis" by Ionescu. No idea what happened there.
