When I think about it...Is Wicked THAT good?

This show got very mediocre reviews and apparently "Word of Mouth" is what made this show big. But is the show itself really THAT good?
Sure the original cast were alright, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, the design side of everything is pretty good too. But does anyone really think the book and score are that good?
Some of the songs, especially in act 2, are pretty terrible, and the book, once again mostly in act 2, seemed to move slow and come to "dead ends".
I generally thought this show was very over-rated and I didn't think for a second that it was going to win best musical.
So what does everyone else think, is Wicked THAT good?

Posted: 5/11/07 at 8:59amNo. It is not that good. The score is boring but the fan girls love it.

I am not a teenage girl and I liked this show. It is not the best show on earth but it offers what the majority of its public is looking for, some laughs, some tears a show with nice effects and good acting and music. When seeing a show you know if the music is good or not if you can whistle its tunes while getting out of the theater and it did that to me.
People like bashing the show but still it has been selling out almost every night since it opened.
By the way I love Sondheim too.

When Wicked opened, I was so expecting it to flop. After hearing about it for 3 years, I finally broke down and listened to it. I haven't seen the show live, but the music is okay. I can't understand the fandom surrounding it - I mean Krisin and Idina's voices, to me, are what make it.
I do like the themes of the show, and can see why fans really relate to/love it tho

I was thinking a few days back about the fact we hadn't seen that same self thread we were having every two hours last year for almost a week. Bingo

Posted: 5/11/07 at 10:22amJust because it's playing to a full theatre does not make it good! "Cats" ran for years and it was dreadful. The number one movie in America every week is most often the worst reviewed. It just goes to show how bad the taste of the masses can be. "Cats", "Wicked", George Bush, George W Bush, etc, etc.

Are you sure CATS got bad reviews ? And from what show is the most played song on radio waves ?
I am glad you think your tastes are better than those of "the masses" though. And putting Bush and Wicked in the same basket sounds a bit extreme IMHO.

I'm glad that you are glad. Good to hear that you agree my taste is the taste that matters!
As for the song you mentioned, there are plenty of awful songs played constantly on the radio. Who can forget "Feelings", "The Macarena", Who Let The Dogs Out?" and, yes, "Memory"?

You thought The Pirate Queen was good, and yet you're questioning the quality of Wicked?
Awesome.

Am I a bad person in that I have little no desire to see it?
And speaking of the masses, I am always flumoxed (is that a word) that the average American only knows the same two or so Broadway shows. Every time I mention to a co-worker that I saw a show on Broadway, they are like "Did you see WICKED?" (It used to be The Producers.) If I mention something like Spring Awakening or Grey Gardens I get blank stares.

Why would that flummox you? Wouldn't you get used to it after a while?

Posted: 5/11/07 at 11:06amI do like this show. But, that is not to say that wicked is the only show I have ever seen and know nothing about theatre ect. FYI I have been going almost religously since six which would be 11 years now. I have seen and loved more things then Wicked. I do think however, that it is sad that there are one or two shows that anyone who doesn't know SH*T about broadway has heard of. I think that those shows would have to be Wicked and Hairspray. I also don' think that the teen fan girls are the ones keeping this open. With tickets as high as they are and conisering the fact that they just raised prices. I don't think that it is getting a majority of it's tickets from the fans. Unlike Rent and dare I say it Legally Blond Wicked is a show that can easily sel tickets without any sort of fanbase. But, having one doesn't hurt.

no
I like the show, but I'm baffled by the fact that it's still at 100% capacity. There are many other shows that deserve that box office more. Though I guess that's not how it works is it?

Posted: 5/11/07 at 12:09pmMaybe the material is not Pulitzer Prize worthy but the show is sumptuous, energetic, colorful and full of emotions that strike me just fine! My rule of thumb is 'don't bore me' and the show does not do that. If I see it this Thurs in Chicago with Trace, it will be my third time - original NYC and 2nd time in Chi.

Posted: 5/11/07 at 12:11pmI wonder who gets to decide if something is actually good? I know I really "liked" Wicked. I had the cast recording before I ever saw the show, and I really loved it! Then I saw the show and thought it was great. I think the premise of the show is attractive to a lot of people. It's always neat to see or hear a story about characters we already know (i.e. The Wizard of Oz) but told in a "their side of the story" fashion. I do understand people on these boards seem to dislike things with mass appeal, but I really think mass appeal is a big deciding factor in what is good. If it wasn't for that, then what? Should we base whether something is good or not on the critics reactions? NO THANK YOU!
