no matter how famous, a true actor has to work. i mean HAS to work. and matthew has been an actor from his earliest teens. i can understand why the 'odd couple' with nathan sounded like it had real possibilities--the magic can come from unexpected places, unexpected scripts. i mean, who knew that old war-horse '12 angry men' would do so well? on the stage we are all sculpting in snow...as soon as its done it melts....and if our latest show or performance doesn't fly all we can do is wait for the next snowstorm...
Good God, was that a terribly atrocious analogy or WHAT!?
Nathan has done exceedingly well and doesn't have to resort (aside from something like Odd Couple, Producers, or the Frogs) to an unnecessary revival or adaptation. He gets money and good work. This is why we luff him. Matthew COULD get money and good work. But he doesn't. This is why we start banal threads like these.

NATHAN was in all the same productions! why is he exempt from the same 'he s picking bad plays/revivals' discussion?? and frankly, matthew's work in 'election' was as daring/interesting as 'the frogs'...
and hey, down there in florida...what makes you the Acting Police? i've seen matthew's work over the years...a bad actor? i think not.
He has gotten good work. Charlie in the Foreigner, Harold Hill in The Music Man and Felix in The Odd Couple are three of my favorite roles in theatre. all three are very different characters and yet he managed to play them exactly the same . To me thats bad acting.

I think this board is to discuss what the members find interesting and who have an opinion about. No offense meant, but if you find a thread lame (and I also find some of them lame), then just don't post in them, no?
Nick At Night...I'm not going to deal with your nonsense if you don't read my post. I said that ASIDE from the Producers, Odd Couple ETC., Lane has gotten GREAT work and has challenged himself. He has travelled all over the country (and the world) to create new roles and revive old ones.
So, I was saying that he manages to get fantastic work and live up to expectations. AND he gets money for it. SOOOOO: the moral is, actor's can still get money and do great work without having to resort to big budget revivals and adaptations.
Now...as for YOU South Fl Marc, if Felix Unger is one of your favorite roles in all of theatre, you need to see some more theatre.
OY VEY.

What they should've done is switched the roles in Odd Couple. Would've been much more interesting and challenging for Matthew to play Oscar and Nathan play Felix.
"we were talkin about matthew."
Oh Really? :
"what are ya smokin' down there??"
Sounds like it, Chorus Member.
Take your own advice.

Although I dont like Matthew at all, In a way he always forced to play the same type of role, kids its called typecasting. And it happens to Nathan as well (but Nathan is good so there is a difference)
Matthew Broderick is not "forced" to play any role. He chooses work that guide his performances. He could easily take risks and try something new. The man has talent. He just needs a good agent.

gotta catch the c train. two shows today. be well and happy holidays...nice kickin it around with ya....thats what makes horse races...
It never gets old when people chicken out and pretend they are acting in a show that has a two-perf Saturday.
Well, it does get old. But it's good for a laugh!
I'll remind everyone as to not single anyone out that personal attacks will not be tolerated and to keep discussions and debates about the subject, not about the poster.
OY VEY. DD you are wrong (like always...glad to see nothing has changed).
In today's world, the agent guides the actor and introduces work/scripts/possible projects. The manager schedules TV appearances and limo rides.
Get it right.
I just realized (and this is a little depressing) that if Matthew Broderick were to come here defending himself like Anthony Rapp does, this time it would be ME fanboying.
No personal attacks here. Don't twist my words Craig.
After all, "We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams..."
I don't think we can say that its that he stopped caring about his craft because we don't know that for sure since we aren't him. Though I loved Matthew onstage as Leo Bloom, and adored him in some of his earlier films, I can't say the same about much lately. I have not seen "the Producers" film, but have to say that in his other recent stuff--The Music Man, Stepford Wives, and The Odd Couple--he overacts terribly. I mean AWFUL. His eyes are always bugging out of his head, he swallows hard I guess to express fear or guilt, and says his lines robotically. It's a shame because I thought he was terrific.
The worse thing Broderick could do would be to do another show with Lane. They will start to get on each others nerves ( if they have not already done so ) & it will show up in their work. The Odd Couple therefore is a perfect vehicle & as you know Oscar throws out Felix. Nathan needs to jettison Matt (or vice versa) for a few years before they think of teeming up again
OY VEY OY VEY OY VEY OY VEY!
"You are such a child" is what you PMed with 5 minutes ago. Good one.
Anyway, time to prove your information wrong once again:
YOU really have some wrong information, and I am NOT sorry to have to inform YOU of this.
There is not a "set in stone" job desciption for an agent/manager. However, management is usually (and in this case always) in charge of the LOOK of the actor--the IMAGE if you will. You are correct about "getting people to work for the actor", as the manager organizes the team that creates the "celebrity"...the "personality, if you will.
However, the agent is in charge of picking out scripts and fitting the actor to the character. For cryin' out loud, you could watch JOEY on NBC and figure this out!!
Your information is always wrong (sometimes, seemingly fabricated).
*DISCLAIMER* THIS IS AN ATTACK ON INFORMATION, NOT ON THE PERSON. (I think...)
XOXOXO

Um..interesting responses... I don't believe that Matthew is losing his touch at all! Maybe the roles just aren't right for him. Time have changed and people are expecting different things from an actor than 10 years ago, and he seems to me one of those old-time favorites.
That is EXACTLY what it is! It's the roles.
Someone is finally reading! There is hope for BWW after all....
