I love how horrifically cynical people can be.

So many people say "It should close." "I wish it would close." "Oh, the day it closes, I shall have a party and invite all my friends."

But yet - these folks cannot truly state the actual REASONS the show should close.

It's a hit. It will always remain a hit. It's a tourist attraction. It's magical. It's got staying power. It's the last of the great written shows. It's doing well at the box office. People love it. It changes people's lives. It's pure theatre.

People want it to close because they, as individuals, don't like it. That's not a reason for it to close :) If you don't like the show, don't listen to the recording. Don't see the movie. Don't read the book. Don't go see it. Don't recommend it to your friends. Pretend it never happened. But don't ignore the fact that it's still a wonderful theatrical experience that will be around for some time, and changed the face of theatre in the United States, and try not to ruin it for all of us that DO love the show.

Here's to the Phantom haunting New York for many more years to come!

AB Fan: I'm glad you listened so carefully to JasonM's very admirable post (probably the best one here.)

How to properly use its/it's: Its is the possessive. It's is the contraction for it is...

well jason, if you dont like the show theres a good chance you dont consider it a wonderful theatrical experience. I for one find the show boring, and think its special effects are extremely dated and if they dont plan to close it, they should atleast give it a shot in the arm to bring it back to life because its become a very tired show. I thought it was wonderful when I was 8 years old but have seen so many wonderful things since then that returning to the show because a friend comes to town for a week is pure torture. It actually saddens me that I know I can suggest things far more captivating but people want to see Phantom cuz theyve heard of it. I do think it could be good again if they bothered to update the staging, sets, special effects, etc but that would probably require closing for a good month and reopening.

It's been my experience that this site has a few folks who love to throw the Holy Handgrenade into any converwsation to stir up controversy and make themselves look "cool" and cynical. The Phantom's producers will continue to take their huge pots of money to the bank and ignore the little twerps sniping at the gates, which by the way is the closest most of those people will ever come to even seeing success.

Well, with ALW's recent failures, I wouldn't be suprised if he milks the HELL out of this show. Granted he's making TONS of money on regional rights, etc, but this is really his only money making show that's still running. I figured they'd run it long enough to make sure it stays as "the longest running" show for a while. When did CATS close? Was it's attendence going down? Or did it just kind of close out of the blue?

Agreed. This is his top money maker and his baby. By all accounts it's doing exceptionally well, he'd be a fool to close it.

CATS was a different scenario altogether. It hadn't been doing well for years before it finally closed; when they made the announcement it was not a surprise. I remember hearing that there were some nights that there were 500 people in the house...and the theatre seats around 1500.

ETA: And JasonM, thank you for your post! I totally agree. If you don't like the show, sheesh, don't see it. Go to something else you enjoy. Hate it or not, POTO is an asset to Broadway. It gives a lot of people work, it brings in a lot of money. It also introduces a lot of young people to the theatre who will return to see other shows and expand their horizons. It's all good.

I'm being frank, but Phantoms is a piece of ****. I hope it closes tomorrow. That won't happen though. I'd say in 7-10 years.

Went to see The History Boys last night and the Phantom line was very, very, very long!

I'd say it will close shortly after the "Lestat" CD is released.
