It's closing tomorrow so that it will close on it's 10th aniversary.
Seriously though, we have no idea.

I think probably 2-4 years. The show is already dated and I would hope that the Larson family will close it while the show is at its peak and not run it into the ground.
2 years? No way, 4 is more like it; however, I truly believe that Rent will make it the 15th year anniversay.
I too agree that it should be pulled before it withers away. Hoewever I could see the family letting it run and run simply because of how difficult and painful it would be for them to close it, since it is their lifeline to Jonathan.

I hope they pull it before its just....like run into the ground. Let it go for a few years, then maybe someone will revive it in about 10-15 years. Give it a whole makeover.
They're doing pretty consistant business. They'll be there for years.
I don't think its closing anytime soon. However, will we have to wait for them to close RENT before MTI releases the rights to it?
I give it about 5 years or so. It would have had a good run, then like Rentboy said they can revive it with a complete makeover, and make it updated.
Let's just hope that when MTI releases the rights to it they make stipulations on it so that only adult theaters can do it, because we don't need any more crappy productions of musicals produced in high schools this country. I have seen the death of many a great musical in the hands of high schoolers!
Why worry about it when there is NO DAY BUT TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you talking about all musicals at the high school level?

if someone thinks they know this, can they please PM me the lottery numbers to play tomorrow? hahahahahah!!!!
I love Rent, but I agree that they should close it before it looses all of its steam. I think the movie and 10th Anniversary will help it out for a while. But, with such low production costs, they could keep it open for a long time.
When everyone born in the early 80's dies.
um i dont think anyone should discourage "crappy high school musicals" a show like this might be a little to adult for a highschool,,, but it has important messages that should reach everyone. you know you've made it when you are playing in Every-town USA.

I agree with Michael. The Larsons will likely want to close the show while still selling well. I doubt they'd want to see Jonathan's show doing horrid business.
Example of bad High School Musical:High School Musical
Rent should have at least 10 years to out run Les Miz at least and close Phantom in 2 years.

I can't believe my eyes when I read comments like this. The Larson's will likely want to close the show while it's still selling well or close it at it's peak? Pretentious much? Seriously?
Because that is the way for Jonathan's work to reach people. Close it while it's still selling. Riiiggghhht. Makes perfect sense.
Not to mention if I hear the word "dated" thrown around one more time I will poke my eyeballs out with a fork.

I saw rent only a little more than a month ago after loving the music and story after seeing the movie -- and now I'm a total rent head. When I went the threater was comletely full, the audience was loving it, and my friends and I had a great time actually dancing in our seats during a lot of the songs, b/c the show is just so friendly like that! the old people with their grandkids behind us liked it too, and i really think Rent can run for a long time, its just that loveable!
according to MTI an estimate for when the rights would be released is summer 2008
I think it will run forever it shure deserves to.
Toon - no matter how you look at it; the show IS DATED. Here's a fork, sweatheart.
And they would get Jonathan's message to a lot more people by closing it on Broadway and allowing regional/college productions to do it. Most could probably do better than what Michael Grief or Chris Columbus did with it.
Two years before regioinal rights are made available? Sounds about right.
And that story about the old people smiling along to the show with their grand kids is hilarious. Those old people must have doubled their meds, because I dont think RENT will ever be viewed as a "lovable" cuddly kind of show.

From what I've heard, it cost 300,000 a week to run...so even if it is only around 60 percent full for the week, it's still making money.
I hope it plays Broadway forever to prevent it from community theatre hell.
I CAN'T WAIT to see RENT done by community theatres! The only thing I'm looking forward to more is high school productions of MISS SAIGON with white girls from the drill team with black spray on their hair and tape on their eyes playing Asian!
