Harsh words from Broadway.com. Oyyy. The majority of the things I like and enjoy about the show (The SEA CAPTAIN!!!), William Stevenson rips apart. :-/
Ouch. Definetely harsh. And how dare they rip up J-Dogg's Lament! I totally don't agree with the stuff about David Josefsberg, and I think Andy sounds much better than 'fine'.
Ugh. My usual agreement with broadway.com reviews has just plummeted.
Well, the reviewer did hit the nail on the head when he said that David's rehashing his same schtick from Altar Boyz. I love the man, and I feel like he's FANTASTIC in Slut, but the minute he walked onstage at the first preview, I turned to Juliet2170 and said "J-Dogg is Abraham after having sex." Because its true...J-Dogg = oversexed Abe.
But the thing is, not everyone who goes to see Slut is going to know David's previous work. Like, people who didn't see him in Altar Boyz aren't going to know that he's doing some of the same stuff as Abe. And I found it uncalled for to say he should've stayed with Altar Boyz; not so much what he said, as in the harsh way he said it.
I just think the reviewer went into the show with the wrong mindset.JMO though.
Just an FYI in regards to the review I posted this morning....broadway.com seems to have taken it down, so the link now goes to a really old article about Phantom coming out on DVD.
According to a friend who went to the party last night, the reviews aren't officially coming out until late tonight/tomorrow... so maybe they had to take it down? The Phantom link is random!
theatremania.com is MUCH kinder than the now non-existent Broadway.com review. Even though I love the show, TM calls out the weak points of the show, most definitely. It admits that the show is amusing and funny, but needs more character and plot development...it also recognizes the impressive ensemble (LOVE them), says that Jenn Collela and Andy are both good in their respective roles, etc.
Well in the grand scheme of reality, there is a great deal more weight to a rave in Variety, than a "pan" on any internet, Broadway based website. That's simply the truth. So, I wouldn't lose sleep over any of it, if I were the cast. They, particularly Karl and colella, got great mentions.
Can someone highlight Variety's? I don't even see it linked on the site.
Broadway.com's seems a bit harsher than it needs to be. Theatremania makes some good points about the issues of the show, but I was glad to see them also highlight what works. Did Talkin' Broadway's review really say Andy Karl was "unsexy"?
Is it just me or do the NY theater critics seem to be getting more and more bitter?
I'd personally like to see these smaller critics stop pretending that anyone actually cares what they think as personalities (sorry, really only John Simon and Ben Brantley are half credible enough to do that) and start to review shows from a slightly more neutral perspective--one that gives me enough info/critique to decide whether I might have any interest in the show, rather than just reading their bitter diatribes on who they think is hot or not... That has no bearing on what I'm going to think of the show and the review becomes useless. It seems like they're more interested in being self-indulgent then being informative or encouraging the next generation of theatergoers.
Meanwhile, in case anyone cares, I think Andy Karl's totally hot.
And anyone who knows me knows that I have a certain fondness for Mr. Karl, so I know that I am biased, but I really, really do not understand how the talkin' broadway critic could find him "unsexy." He's incredibly charismatic and very sexy up on that stage.
The Times is up. REALLY short, but includes this passage:
"David Josefsberg gives a star turn, breathing originality into two of the genre's most worn stock characters: the smarmy agent and the dumpy sidekick. The score by Stephen Sislen delivers complex harmonies and solid rock 'n' roll. And Ben H. Winters's lyrics frequently dazzle, despite his sentimental book, which is more inane than absurdist. He plays out a seemingly endless string of hilarious metaphors for impotence (proving euphemism is in fact funnier) and offers a fine retort to every inspirational ballad ever written in "Lower the Bar"."
Bree, I can't believe how you read my mind. How long have I been griping about these on line theater "critics"? Not only are they biased in a whole other way as far as the men they favor are concerned, but it's laugh out loud funny and diminishes them to the hacks they are when they would be daft enough to call someone as blatantly masculine, virile and sexy as Karl, "unsexy."
Not blind, just agenda ridden and clearly incompetent. Can't Broadway.com hire any better reviewers? What are they thinking having this guy represent their site? As for Matthew murray, well that's like giving credibility to your cousin for writing a review on his blog. Means about that much.
