By sheer luck, I was able to see the documentary on the SUNSET BOULEVARD production in Melbourne with Debra as Norma and Hugh Jackman as Joe Gillis. The production looked great, as shown on some clips in the documentary and Debra was as great as the other Normas in other productions of the stage musical. Clips were shown with her singing WITH ONE LOOK, AS IF WE NEVER SAID GOODBYE, a session showing her humming SURRENDER with Hugh ( Sigh - I never thought humming a song can produce such a romantic sound), waltzing with Hugh in THE PERFECT YEAR and other rehearsal scenes. It is sad that the production suffered a number of misfortunes - but more from off-stage incidents ( except for one where Debra collapsed on the stairs in one of the previews due to an ear infection) and had to close prematurely.
As for Hugh - he was 8 years younger during that production! Need I say more? His duet of TOO MUCH IN LOVE TO CARE is glorious! And he sang SUNSET BOULEVARD with the right amount of cynicism and frustration. I hope he gets to reprise the role of Joe Gillis in the movie version, if ALWebber ever gets to filming it...The documentary also showed some interview scenes with Hugh as well as scenes showing him getting ready for the show ( rehearsing his speaking voice, putting on makeup, rehearsing the duet, etc).
As an offshoot of their teaming up in this show, Debra recorded a duet with Hugh using a mini-medley of two Sondheim songs : Not While I'm Around /Children Will Listen. Beautiful!
